WELD TO STRIKE DOWN UNDER AGAIN? No Irish racing on Monday but in the early hours of Tuesday trainer Dermot Weld bids for a third success in the Melbourne Cup.
Frustrating day for me on Sunday. A Star Is Born ran very poorly on his debut at Leopardstown and was a massive drifter in the final few minutes of trading whilst my win and place selection, Bangonform in the Cork National finished one spot out of the places at 9/1.
It’s the race that stop’s a nation and Dermot Weld is very happy with Melbourne Cup hope Galileo’s Choice who has recovered well from transit fever ahead of the Flemington showpiece at 4am on Tuesday morning.
Weld already has two Melbourne Cups to his credit, with Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle 10 years ago, and is optimistic of a big run from Galileo’s Choice who is trading around 17 on BETDAQ.
“He had a problem with transit fever when he first arrived but he as able to be treated and got over it very quickly,” the Irish trainer told www.racingvictoria.net.au.
“He has improved every week he’s been here and I’m delighted with the horse.
“He is a very talented galloper.”
French trainer Mikel Delzangles, fresh from saddling Flotilla to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf at Santa Anita on Friday, is delighted with the well-being of last year’s winner Dunaden.
“If he can get the same sort of run he had last year he will be in the finish,” he said.
“I’m confident that he has improved from the Caulfield Cup.”
