PREVIEW
Bradford have already knocked out Wigan and Arsenal from this year’s League Cup and take on more Premier League opposition tonight when they host Aston Villa in the first leg of their semi-final. No League Two side has ever eliminated three top division sides in the same competition previously.
And it would be easy to get carried away with the Bantams’ win over Arsenal last month. The Gunners were overly confident, played a slightly weakened team and just didn’t look up for it on a playing surface that did not suit their fluid play at all. Of course, it was disappointing to lose but it hardly makes Bradford world beaters, even if winning nine successive penalty shoot-out must be close to a world record.
Villa have been dreadful for the most part in the league but have found solace in the cups this term. They have already beaten Manchester City at the Etihad and thrashed Norwich 4-1 away in the quarters. The Villans travel to Valley Parade on the back of a 2-1 FA Cup win over Ipswich and have won all 19 of their previous ties with fourth tier teams, averaging 3.5 goals a game and never failing to score in a contest.
The Bantams have won just one of their last five matches and Paul Lambert is not going to miss out on the chance of playing at Wembley, so expect a strong Villa side to line-up.
However you put it, the Premier League team should have far too much for their fourth tier opponents and, even in front of vocal home support, they can get the away win.
