The World Cup is back on the agenda for the next few days as national sides look to edge a little closer to booking their places at Brazil 2014. England have two games in quick succession and they need to win both if they are to leapfrog Montenegro into top spot.
The Three Lions are currently two points behind the group leaders and they face rock-bottom San Marino later. It’s up for debate whether teams like San Marino should have to qualify to even reach this stage as their results show no sign of improving. One international win in their history says it all.
San Marino have lost each of their four group games without scoring a goal and conceding 16 times in the process. England hit five past them in the last meeting and nothing other than a comfortable win is expected.
The real action comes when England travel to Montenegro on Tuesday night. Assuming both win Friday night’s games then the Montenegrins can potentially open up a five point lead at the summit. I’ve got a feeling England will struggle as they have failed to win their past two meetings with the hosts.
It finished 2-2 when they met two years ago in a game that Wayne Rooney will want to forget. The Man United striker was sent off when England had a 2-0 lead and they ended up drawing 2-2. Rooney is in good scoring form with four in as many internationals and I fancy him to notch another here.
A point would be a superb result for Montenegro as it would keep England at arm’s length with time running out. With that in mind I fancy them to sit deep and frustrate the Three Lions for a share of the spoils.
Elsewhere, Scotland and Wales meet at Hampden Park on Friday night. Scotland are without a win from four games and Wales have only won once, so it’s no surprise to see the two propping up the table. Qualification looks out of reach for both and pride is all there is to play for.
Wales won their last game against Austria in a friendly to give Chris Coleman a little more breathing room. Two late Gareth Bale goals gave Wales their only win of the group and the Scots will be delighted he has been carrying an ankle injury in the build-up.
A lack of goals is a common theme for both teams as Wales have scored only three times in four outings and Scotland have managed one fewer.
Neither side is playing well enough to take all three points, so back the draw at 3.65 on BETDAQ.
