Last time in my Bet Dec column the selection was Manchester United to beat Real Madrid. And it’s fair to say United were robbed. It looked an unbelievable decision to send off Nani and, after seeing Callum McManaman’s horror tackle on Newcastle’s Massadio Haidara last Sunday, it’s no wonder people complain about inconsistency from referees.

I had a great week with the Cheltenham Festival and was there on Gold Cup Day to see my long-term Irish fancy Our Conor scoot home in the opener to make it a profitable day. Bobs Worth landed me a few bob in the showpiece too.

Looking at the rugby I don’t think we should be too harsh on England after their failure to land the Grand Slam and indeed the Six Nations title. People forget that England have only ever once won the Grand Slam since the format was extended to six sides and better teams than the current one have failed.

So we shouldn’t write this side off. Wales had their bad times coming into the tournament but probably should have beaten Ireland in their opener and then they would have been the Grand Slam kings. Next year Stuart Lancaster’s men will be back stronger and can hopefully go one better.

This week’s bet is going on Fernando Alonso to win the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Spaniard made a solid start to the season with a second in the Australian Grand Prix last weekend and that will set him up nicely for this race which he won last year.

Jenson Button has already come out and said he doesn’t think his car is fast enough to win races while Lewis Hamilton will probably need a bit more time to settle in at Mercedes.

Of all the teams Ferrari look the most settled, and both Alonso and Felipe Massa made a good start Down Under. Alonso knows his way around this course as, in addition to his win here last term, he triumphed in 2005 and 2007.

The two-time World Champion is around 5.1 on BETDAQ to lift the prize in Sepang and that looks a decent bet.
