Malmo are in pole position to qualify for the next stage of Champions League qualifying after a 1-0 win at Ibrox and an all important away goal. Rangers will count themselves a little fortunate that the task ahead is not even harder and they have Allan McGregor to thank for some important stops in the first leg.
Ally McCoist faces a tough ask if his side are to progress, but he’ll head into the clash in a better mood having picked up his first win of the season with a 2-0 result at St. Johnstone. Rangers’ away form in Europe has been woeful in recent years and that has seen them go 12 matches without an away victory. McCoists’ situation is made that much harder as UEFA have banned Rangers fans from travelling to the ground.
With a one goal advantage, Malmo manager Rikard Norling will likely deploy similar counter-attacking tactics that worked so well a week ago in Glasgow. Rangers have to push for the away goal and that might just play into the hands of the hosts, who will look to catch them on the break. Further concern for Rangers is that Brazilian Ricardinho should return to the side, who missed the first leg.
With another game under their belts, Rangers will give it a real go in Sweden but ultimately this European adventure looks likely to come to an early end. Rangers are worth backing to get a draw, but I cannot see them scoring enough to take the tie.
