Roger Federer hit the milestone of 900 career wins with a five-set win over Gilles Simon in the fourth round of the French Open on Sunday, but he had to survive a scare when 2-1 down on sets. However, he came through well enough in the end to reach his 36th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final where he will take on the talented Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The Frenchman will have the home support as he bids to beat Federer for the fourth time in his career. The sixth seed currently trails the Swiss 9-3 in the head-to-head record but has beaten Federer in a Grand Slam before, as well as the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, so he should not be taken lightly.
The leading home hope has been brilliant so far, yet to drop a set against some experienced players. Federer looked smart in his opening two matches but they were against low-ranked players and he was not impressive last time out.
At 31, the record-breaking Grand Slam champion is not getting any younger and Tsonga’s powerful play is bound to cause problems.
As expected, Federer is the favourite at around 1.6 on BETDAQ and that leaves Tsonga at an appealing 2.64 on BETDAQ for a minor upset. However, the best bet looks to be backing over 40.5 games, as this is a match likely to go the distance.
