4-1 NAP AS DAQMAN WINS WHATEVER THE VENUE: Daqman landed four winning bets at four different meetings yesterday including the nap, Venue (WON 4-1).
SEVEN SUCCESSES IN TWO DAYS : He also scored with Orbison (WON 7-2), Emerald Glade (WON 11-8) and his lay. This follows three Saturday winners. Total two-day profit: 33 points.
It was the late late show at Salisbury yesterday.
My nap, Venue, in the 5.10 race looked a hopeless cause and it was no surprise to see eventual runner-up Thouwra trade at the basement 1.01 on BETDAQ. Thouwra looked home for all money but Micky Fenton onboard Venue had different ideas and he conjured up a fantastic late surge from Venue to get up in the closing stages to land the nap by a neck at 4/1.
Elsewhere it was another day of surprise results – particularly at the Curragh. Surely the combined results over the three days of the Derby meeting was nothing other than a layers paradise?
I opposed Alive Alive Oh in the Pretty Polly Stakes but she was a late withdrawl, again, because of the ground. She missed the Ribblesdale for the same reason and surely the thinking now is that she is simply a soft ground filly who won’t be risked on any other surface.
It’s pretty much standard Monday fare today with the mandatory Windsor evening meeting, all-weather action from Wolverhampton and cards from Pontefract and Ffos Las.
We do have a good class 2 at Pontefract to look forward to. The Spindrifter Conditions Stakes at 3.00 which has been reduced to a field of four after the morning defection of Milly’s Secret.
That’s left the Richard Fahey trained Rufford as the warm favourite on BETDAQ at around 1.75 and he looks a solid, if predictable, nap to start the week.
I was impressed with the way he travelled on debut at York. It was over today’s trip of six furlongs and on fast ground and he only had to be shaken up in the closing stages.
He should obviously improve for that first effort and can give Fahey a repeat success in the race after Euxton Hall won last year – co-incidentally when it was also a four runner race and Euxton Hall was around the same price that Rufford will be today.
Main danger is Fair Ranger for Richard Hannon. He has run well in all three starts and only got up close home to win his maiden at Doncaster last time out over today’s six furlongs. He should be suited by the stiff test which is the Pontefract course but perhaps doesn’t have the scope that Rufford does at this early stages of their careeers.
Spats Columbo is of interest in the competitive 1m 4f handicap at 4.30.
The Micky Hammond trained three-year-old is only two pounds higher after his success (dead-heat) at Carlisle last time out.
The form has worked out well since and he should relish the extra furlong today. A follow-up success looks on the cards here.
Ffos Las is a track where favourites don’t have a great record and my instinct was to try and find one to beat Sand Boy in the 8.45. However, I’m struggling and think at 2.23 on BETDAQ he is a good bet to follow-up on his Ayr success for which he is penalised 7lb. The Charles Hills trained runner, part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, has a great chance of going in again.
DAQMAN’S BETS:
BET 8pts win (nap) RUFFORD (3.00 Pontefract)
BET 4pts win SPATS COLUMBO (4.30 Pontefract)
BET 6pts win SAND BOY (8.45 Ffos Las)
