As expected England didn’t pull up any trees with their first Euro outing as Roy Hodgson’s pragmatic approach held the French at arm’s length to secure a decent point. That draw is only a good one if the Three Lions build on it and they have a big chance against Sweden on Friday evening. Ukraine’s impressive victory over Sweden means that the final Group D fixture will have plenty riding on it even if the co-hosts lose to France.

There were enough positives to take from the game especially as France came into the match on the back of 21 unbeaten matches. England’s unwillingness of going for it with 20 minutes to go was frustrating given Les Bleus’ suspect pairing at centre-back.

Sweden are OK, but nothing more than that. The obvious exception is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but I fancy John Terry and Jolean Lescott to keep a lid on the Milan forward. They looked solid against the French and with really only one man to watch it should be much easier this time around. Of course another few days training cannot have done any harm at all for the partnership.

England look set to go with the same line-up and I completely agree with that call. With a little more aggression going forward England are ready to get their tournament up and running.
