It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the start of something special… my new column in the London Irish matchday programme! For every home game this season I’ll share my thoughts on some of the other big sporting events and the club’s new betting partner, BETDAQ, will put their money where my mouth is with a £25 bet on my tip of the week. All winnings go to the Prince’s Trust at the end of the season, so wish me luck!

For sports professionals and fans alike the start of the season is always a time for optimism, but I can’t be the only Arsenal supporter who’s not feeling all that chipper this year. I don’t remember ever having so much stick from the lads as I got after the 8-2 pummeling at Old Trafford. The Gunners can be backed at a whopping 62.0 on BETDAQ to win the title, but I’ll be saving my money after watching that game the other week – I can’t see the Premier League title being won by anyone other than Manchester United or City.

United are playing Stoke City this evening after our game against the Falcons. Although the Red Devils have beaten Stoke every time they’ve met in the Premier League, I reckon this will be tight. Tony Pulis is a fine manager and he made some great signings this summer that will only make his side harder to beat. Last season both games ended 2-1 to United and a repeat of that scoreline is my bet of the week at around 8.0 on BETDAQ.

Another wager I like this weekend is Fernando Alonso to win tomorrow’s Singapore GP. No, I haven’t gone mad, and yes, Sebastien Vettel is walking away with the title, but Alonso is a decent price on BETDAQ at around 5.5. He took the chequered flag here last year – and in 2008 – while Vettel has never won on the circuit. It won’t be easy to keep the reigning world champion off the top step of the podium, but if anyone can, it’s the speedy Spaniard.
