PSG AS LONG AS 46.0 SECONDS BEFORE ATALANTA’S HEARTBREAK

A thrilling finale to the first Champions League game of the 2020 mini tournament saw heartbreak for Atalanta, as two late PSG goals secured a place in the semi-finals for the Parisians.

As the game kicked off inside the Estadio Da Luz, underdogs Atalanta were available at 3.4, with star-studded PSG at 2.05. However, in a first half hour dominated by the Italian side, they made their pressure pay in the 28th minute when Mario Pasalic curled in the opening goal. After a blistering start, Atalanta had moved to 1.8 favourites to win the game, while PSG slipped to 4.6.

Going into the break, the lingering question of the squadron of stars lining the PSG bench remained, particularly as the returning Kylian Mbappe warmed up. Nevertheless, Atalanta went in to the second half at 1.87.

With several of their top players missing, PSG struggled to break down the Italian side for long periods of the second half. Thomas Tuchel finally unleashed Mbappe on the hour mark and the game became much more stretched. But as he and Neymar both missed chances in quick succession time began to run out, with PSG now 11.00 and drifting with 15 minutes to play.

The minutes continued to fall away with Atalanta heavy favourites at 1.18 heading into injury time – there was seemingly no way back for PSG – now 46 to win – and the Parisians were staring at another Champions League disaster. That was until Neymar’s miscued shot found its way to Marquinhos inside the box, who duly levelled the game.

With the final whistle merely seconds away, we looked set for extra-time, with the draw a normally nailed-on 1.11.

Although Atalanta would have rightly feared Mbappe’s impact from the bench, they might have been less concerned about Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who had barely featured for the French side this campaign.

As it was, the two super substitutes would combine to send PSG, whose in-play odds had shifted from 46.00 to 1.04 in just three crazy minutes, into their first Champions League semi-final in 25 years.

PSG are now 4.45 to get their hands on the trophy, with Manchester City the favourites at 3.3 in the outright market.
