LADY PENELOPE GETS THE HURRY UP

2.40 Ayr (Harry Rosebery Stakes) Some of those behind the York sales-race sensation – Mums Tipple by 11 lengths- have failed to uphold the form.

But I like the way Lady Penelope has gone on from her second to Piece Of Paradise at Tipperary before that one was fourth when Mums Tipple did his thing at York.

Lady Penelope, big at 9.0 on BETDAQ this morning, broke her maiden at Down Royal and moves straight to a Listed, as did her sire Night Of Thunder, who would subsequently beat Kingman in the 2,000 Guineas.

The Tipperary maiden was the same race won by another Irish winner of this Harry Rosebery race, Hurryupharriet (2013).

2.55 Newbury St Ives was one of those in rear when Mums Tipple went off into another county but he was well backed overnight for this 7f nursery with bookmakers.

Richard Hannon has won this three years in four but recent winner Cheat was 10 lengths behind St Ives that day.

St Ives (BETDAQ 7.2 offers taken), coming out of the one stall, should get a lead from Pitchcombe (in 2), who made all on the last day, first run gelded.

CAPE PALACE LOOKS A GOLDEN COLT

3.15 Ayr (Scottish Fillies’ Sprint) The Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury in May now reads like a who’s-who of fast three-year-olds.. winner Khaadem (Stewards Cup), second Oxted (Portland) and third Space Traveller (Jersey Stakes).

The grey filly Red Impression, who was fifth when favourite that day, and is now around 6-1 on BETDAQ, has her first run since after a wind op, and a Group-3 entry next time suggests she is ‘expected’ to bounce back today.

Woody Creek, second in both the Curragh Dash and the Phoenix Sprint, will find out her out if any cobwebs need brushing away.

3.25 Newbury (Haynes, Hanson and Clark Stakes) Derby sleuths put this one under the microscope. They could have found from its winners Epsom heroes Henbit (1979) and Shergar (1980) and from its placed horses Shahrastani (1985) and Authorized (2006). Not many races from outside the Pattern can boast four Derby winners!

This column was on Cape Palace before the mountain of money which preceded his eight-lengths romp at Newcastle. The Golden Horn colt could again be a much better price in early-mouse offers on BETDAQ than at any time before the ‘off.’

BIG POINTERS TO KINGSCOTE MOUNT

3.45 Ayr (Bronze Cup) As I was saying (3.15 Ayr), three year-olds Khaadem and Oxted have won the recent big sprints, Stewards Cup and Portland Handicap.

And four out of five winners of this consolation for the Ayr gold and silver – both run on Saturday – were drawn in double figures, two of them coming out of 27.

No wonder second-season animals Pendleton (25) and Friendly Advice (14) are well supported in the Bronze betting. But the stats have it that an outsider will win: 20-1 (twice), 12-1 (twice) and 14-1 in the five seasons.

Keith Dalgleish won it in 2013 with one which had won or been placed six times over 7f but had won at 6f from the front. Howzer Black (out of 18), a three-year-old, is a similar sort; less prolific, but claimed off, so one of the five bottomweights.

Shallow Hal (24) is another who gets further in his second season and will appreciate the fast pace but whether he will like the drying ground is another matter. First run gelded.

Airglow, fourth in the Great St Wilfrid consolation, faces a similar problem with the ground, but he’s a different horse for Nathan Evans, is below his last winning mark and has clearly been saved up for the late season.

Pendleton has yet to win a handicap and is looking bridesmaid-like, with form figures of 02232 on turf this year. Friendly Advice has won only in class 5 and has not improved more than 3-4lb. since the Spring.

Music Society has to carry a penalty and appears to be a sprinter pure and simple. The brothers Primo’s Comet and Tommy G, along with Paddy Power, stayed on at the end of the Stewards Cup consolation.

Lucky Lucky Man loved the heavy ground last year. Captain Jameson won a big-field handicap at York last October and is back to the winning mark.

That’s ditto Big Lachie, on whom Richard Kingscote was brought in five days ago (on Sunday) to get acquainted for this. Big Lachie’s wins have come 10 days, 7 days, 16 days, 12 days, 6 days and 11 days after a prep race.

Short list in alpha order, with BETDAQ offers this morning: Airglow (37.0), Big Lachie (13.0), Captain Jameson (19.5), Howzer Black (62.0) and Shallow Hal (15.0).
