THE CARD FOR CHAMPIONS DAY ON SATURDAY

Fill your BETDAQ wallet ready. I’m setting the scene here for Saturday’s Champions Day at Ascot. In the next few days, I will be examining the stats and finding some Hot Spots, which have had at least one winner a week so far. First check out the card:

12.45 Ascot (Long Distance Cup) Irish raiders are four in a row in this, after Fame And Glory, Rite Of Passage, Royal Diamond and Forgotten Line.

Barry Hills was the last winning English trainer. He was also responsible for five consecutive with one horse: Further Flight (1991-5).

1.20 Ascot (Sprint) Ireland again! Currently three on the trot, with Maarek, Slade Power and Gordon Lord Byron, though they’ve scored only five times since 1979.

Horses can win sprints up to 11 or even 12 years old, but not in this title race, formerly known as the Diadem. In the last 36 years, just three aged five and one aged six have won.

The 32 others add up to: three-year-olds 17, four-year-olds 15, with England 28, Ireland 5, France 3

1.55 Ascot (Fillies and Mares) A battle of the last two Classic generations, with the score three-year-olds 26 (including Madame Chiang last year), four-year-olds 7. Just one older mare (aged 5) has won.

Sir Michael Stoute has scored seven times since 1979. Ryan Moore is the winningmost jockey recently with three since 2004.

2.30 Ascot (Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes) Winners of this come from the top of the charts, from Brigadier Gerard (1971-2) to Frankel (2011). Charm Spirit scored for Freddy Head a year ago.

It’s a close-run thing for the Classic generation this century, but they are on a hat-trick on Saturday, with the score: three-year-olds 9, four and five year olds 6.

3.05 Ascot (Champion Stakes) Different dates for some of these races allowed Brigadier Gerard to follow up in this and win in the same years (1971-2) but Frankel had to wait until the following year (2012), with the races now on the same card.

Tom Queally, who rode Frankel, had landed back-to-back success with Twice Over (2009-10). Noble Mission won last year.

3.45 Ascot (Balmoral Handicap) There are 42 entries for this £250,000 mile handicap, which closes the card on the last big day of the 2015 Flat season in Europe.

BIZZY BATTLE FOR THE APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR

2.30 Windsor Jack Garrity might get one back on Tom Marquand here, currently 52-50 behind his apprentice-title rival. They have 10 rides between them on what could be a decisive day.

Garrity’s mount, Showbizzy, is by a sire whose family revel in a nice easy surface – though not too soft – and she has a good draw on her handicap debut: 9.6 available but an open market at 7.4 the field and only 4.6 points separating eight runners in an unsettled 120% orange.

Something had to give, and I stuck out for 10.0 Showbizzy to try to secure a commission cut. Her maiden on the last day was packed with winners.

4.00 Windsor Charles Hills’ stable house superfast Muhaarar and Magical Memory, but he is sweet at a lower level on Free To Love, a slow-maturing daughter of his father’s sprint star, Equiano, out of a mare from the Piccolo line which like an easy surface.

She looks a huge price at offers of around 12.0 on BETDAQ this morning, presumably because her success so far has come on a firm surface.

HOPEFUL OF HOPKINS IN THE OLD HOME TOWN

4.20 and 5.20 Salisbury It’s a home from home at Salisbury today for Newmarket trainer, David Elsworth, who used to be master of Whitsbury, just 10 miles down the road.

‘Elzie’ has maintained his connection with an impressive 26% strike rate (50% this year), which makes him leading trainer at Salisbury on winners to runners in the last five seasons.

Three-year-olds are on a four-timer in the 4.20 conditions race, and it’s my belief that we haven’t seen the best of the Elsworth inmate, Justice Well (4.20), this season.

Fifth in the Chesham at Royal Ascot last year, and now dropped in grade after a light season. A win-and-place punt at 23.0 in the BETDAQ orange this morning.

As well as its formidable Salisbury record, the Elsworth stable has a 21% strike rate with three-year-olds this season, and also runs the unexposed Mark Hopkins (5.20), the only one backed to beat Scrutinise.

Scrutinise has been a flag-bearer for Ed Dunlop, who has had another poor season, with only 18 turf winners.

You have to add Ed’s 2014 and 2015 turf totals together to reach his score for 2013, such is the slump in his fortunes.

THE FORCE BE WITH YOU OVER THE STICKS..

2.40 Sedgefield Dan Skelton is nothing if not consistent, with 15 runners out of 18 (still standing) reaching the first four in the last fortnight.

And the added touch of a tongue-tie to The Western Force after giving him a holiday suggests that today’s the day, first time in a handicap: 9.0 on BETDAQ, as I write.

BETDAQ BETS (staked 1 to 9 for strength; 10 would be a banker)
BET 2pts win and place SHOWBIZZY (2.30 Windsor)
BET 2pts win and place THE WESTERN FORCE (2.40 Sedgefield)
BET 2pts win and place FREE TO LOVE (4.00 Windsor)
BET 1pt win and place JUSTICE WELL (4.20 Salisbury)
BET 6pts win (nap) MARK HOPKINS (5.20 Salisbury)
