6-1 LADBROKES NATIONAL WIN AS DAQMAN HITS BULL FOUR TIMES: Another National falls to Daqman! He yesterday landed his fourth winning bull’s-eye bet (from five races) in three days – worth 200 points – with Aforementioned in the Ladbrokes Munster National at Limerick. The aforementioned Daqman now leads Pricewise for value winners by 47-28, with more than 419 points now separating them to level stakes.

TOMORROW: CHAMPIONS DAY COUNTDOWN: After today’s wrap on last week’s big race, Daqman will tomorrow start his countdown to Saturday’s British Champions Day at Ascot, the final fling of the 2020 Flat season, when he hopes to widen the gap to 500 points over Pricewise in big-race profit for the season.

2021 COULD BE A WEMBLEY DERBY

Don’t mark them down! If the Dewhurst lived up to its billing at the weekend as one of the best in years, with seemingly a lot of depth, then don’t throw the losers on to the scrap heap!

They could win money for you when the ground is better in next year’s campaign, maybe even in a Classic.

🏇 Thunder Moon Not a big horse for a ploughing match! She finished clear of Wembley and St Mark’s Basilica in the National Stakes (good ground). That 1-2-3 was reversed on soft in the Dewhurst but, when the going is back on top, there could be a different result again.

🏇 Wembley was held up in rear in both National Stakes and Dewhurst. To be placed in both suggests that he’s a galloper, reliable, and versatile as to ground, that he needs further and that he will be a considerable force when he is fully grown. Derby?

🏇 Cadillac Jessica Harrington brought Cadillac over to finish fifth yesterday, but I would rather have seen Lucky Vega, her Phoenix winner, who was hampered twice at the business end of the National Stakes.

🏇 Chindit Said to have done a ‘wonder gallop on grass’ in prepping for the Dewhurst at the Richard Hannon stables, Chindit struggled to get back his rhythm after being squeezed for room when they reached the last quarter mile.

On loose ground, the dip on that Rowley Mile is no place to retrieve your balance, so he wasn’t punished in the final furlong. A miler to follow in the Spring.

🏇 Alkumait Overawed by the occasion, pulling hard in the race and hating the ground. There’s a lot more needed to create the finished article.

🏇 St Mark’s Basilica I’ve left the Dewhurst winner until last, to strike a note of caution. This colt is a 1,300,000-guinea half-brother to Magna Grecia, who staked his Classic claim by winning the Futurity at Doncaster. That race is still to come.

Look out for my Fortune Cookies list for Saturday, the championships finale of the Flat season, followed next week by a new list for the Jumps.

PANG OF WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

⭕ 2.00 Musselburgh (Flying Scotsman Stakes) Tim Easterby has had a fantastic year with 78 winners. But has his best horse been missing from the party? And I mean one of his best this century.

Lampang, running in this after a year off, was being prepared for Royal Ascot as a two-year-old but had ‘a lot of little problems, some of which have resurfaced this year.’

Easterby said last Spring: ‘Lampang is a very, very good horse. He’s as good as we’ve trained for a long time. You don’t get many like that.’

Lampang’s last run was at Listed level 366 days ago and this is a drop down to class 3, and with a nine-year-old (Danzeno) as the likely favourite.

Makanah also drops from Listed level – fourth in the Beverley Bullet – and Soldier’s Minute was fourth in the Ayr Gold Cup.

But Lampang, reckoned better than Art Power at his best, is hopefully at least a third of the way up the ladder on the way back to top billing. That’s all he needs to win this.

Lampang was 7.2 on BETDAQ this morning. Has his reputation been forgotten? Will we see money for him later? He’s a back and lay but I would regret not napping him at that price if he wins a street.

OPPOSING FRIDAY ON MONDAY

⭕ 3.00 Musselburgh No surprise to see Black Friday out again so quickly after his smooth victory at Ayr last week where he stayed on strongly to win over six furlongs on heavy ground.

He races with the statutory 5lb penalty on better ground and over the minimum trip but looks worth taking on as he has yet to win over this trip.

Whilst he is a previous Musselburgh winner – that was over seven furlongs on soft last year – a far greater test of stamina than he’ll face today.

The answer might lie with Jim Goldie (3 winners in last 14 days) and Primo’s Comet. His form is fairly well exposed but crucially does run this course and distance well – form figures of 71621273 and put in a good round last time out when 3rd to Victory Angel having met trouble in running.

The handicapper has dropped him a pound but could have easily put him UP in the weights for that effort and has given him a real chance of landing another course win.

REWARDS MAY BE SWEET

⭕ 4.40 Windsor Heavy ground at Windsor and that must be a concern for High Commissioner here who has shown his best form on quicker ground and the all-weather. And that’s before you consider that Paul and Oliver Cole are 0-12 over the last 14 days.

Sweet Reward looks the better option for Jonathan Portman. His only win to date came on soft ground at Newbury and whilst he is higher in the weights now he might be able to overcome that on ground he likes.

It’s probably best to ignore his disappointing effort last time out on good to firm ground at Newmarket.
