DETTORI ON HASKOY IN THE LEGER

⭕ 3.35 Wednesday, Doncaster (Sceptre Filles Stakes, Group 3) AGE: 3yo 6-10. LAYS LOGIC: Only one favourite has won in the decade and a typical outsider to score was an 18-1 shot for Andrew Balding, coming into the race without a win for two years (0-13). Balding has Bounce The Blues in Wednesday’s race.

⭕ 2.35 Thursday, Doncaster (May Hill Stakes, 2yo Group 2) Named after May Hill, whose victories included the Park Hill Stakes (1975), this race has brought Oaks stars to the fore, like Height Of Fashion and Reams Of Verse.

Last year it seemed to cap them all with John Gosden’s Inspiral but her four in a row didn’t become five until after a 252-day break; she recovered from a setback to land the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot first run back.

Team Gosden and Frankie Dettori could combine for dual winner Liftoff on Thursday but watch out for William Buick on Team Johnston’s Dance In The Grass.

Dettori was handed a 14-day ban (effective after the St Leger and before the Arc) for going one strike over the limit when his mount, Torquator Tasso, split Mendiconi and Sammarco at the finish of the Grosser Preis von Baden yesterday.

⭕ 3.10 Thursday, Doncaster (Park Hill Stakes (Group 2) The fillies’ St Leger. AGE: 4yo 6, 3yo 4. SP: Eight winners out of 10 were 5-1 or shorter; among them four favourites.

Ralph Beckett, who has taken the Park Hill twice in the decade, has three left in but announces that one of them, Galtres Stakes winner Haskoy, will be supplemented for Saturday’s St Leger, with Dettori booked to ride.

That leaves Beckett’s main Park Hill representative as the year older Yesyes, who was third in the race last year and stayed on to be fourth on her belated reappearance over the Park Hill trip at Glorious Goodwood.

The Goodwood second and third, Urban Artist and Emily Dickinson, are still in Thursday’s race, and the winner’s stable – the all conquering William Haggas yard – could step up hat-trick winner Sea On Time out of handicaps.

ANALYSIS POINTS TO SIGMUND

⭕ 6.00 Newcastle I’m sticking with the evening action at Newcastle today as the jumps cards don’t make too much appeal and Brighton is, well Brighton!

Sigmund looks the nap on the card in the maiden. He made a really pleasing debut at York when 7th of 17 in the Convivial which is a race that usually works out well. We’ll neeed to take that on trust this year as none of the six who finished in front of him have yet to reappear.

He was a 100/1 shot at York and was doing his best work near the end of the race so will undoubtedly need a longer trip in time but this looks a good stepping stone and is frankly a weak contest.

The second favourite on Betdaq Betting Exchange is debutant Wamalama who has already been gelded and represents a stable currently 0-9 over the last two weeks and one that aren’t known for their winning two-year-old newcomers.

Of those that have run, Star Start might be the biggest danger based on his Musselburgh third last time out which was a big improvement on his debut run here at Newcastle.

DIAMOND TO SPARKLE AGAIN

⭕ 7.00 Newcastle This class 3 is the best race on the card and Diamond Bay can follow up on his Lingfield success off a 3lb higher mark.

He has done well since being stepped up in trip and whilst only getting up in the closing stages won quite cosily at Lingfield.

Haveyoumissedme ran well over course and distance in June but hasn’t build on that in two starts since and might need more help from the handicapper than the pound drop gets today.

YAA IS A HOBBY HORSE

⭕ 8.30 Newcastle The sprint handicaps here can be like spinning the roulette wheel at times but I thought Yaahobby looked a little overpriced in this one.

He’s been dropping down the handicap and judged on his Southwell third last time out might now be ready to strike in a handicap for the first time. His latest effort can also be upgraded as he was denied a clear run.

Hot Scoop looks set to go well again. He failed by just a head to follow up on his Catterick success at Beverley last time out and can reach the podium in this company.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
