WANDERING TO WOLVERHAMPTON

I thought it looked a quiet start to the racing week today but it might get worse tomorrow 🙁

Both Sedgefield and Market Rasen must pass course inspections with the probability of sub-zero overnight temperatures mixed in with snow and sleet showers tomorrow morning.

If we lose both cards then it will just be seven races on the all-weather at Southwell !!

At least racing goes ahead today with soft ground for the jumps cards at Newcastle and Southwell.

After the splendid Dublin Racing Festival I’m not sure I can face today’s jumps cards, which include a two-runner handicap at Newcastle, with much enthusiasm so will defer all of today’s bets to the tea-time card at Wolverhampton which gets underway at 4.45pm.

Two races for the price of one to start the meeting but the opening two divisions of the apprentice handicap look impossible.

5.45 Wolverhampton I’m always wary of ratings in selling races, especially horses tumbling down the weights and looking to have a theoretical good chance in the bottom grade. The problem is always that they are tumbling down the weights for a good reason and may not yet have reached their basement level.

Al Khan here for example. 12 months ago he was racing off a mark of 92 – a full 22lb higher than today but on the back of a tame effort last time out at Wolverhampton it would take a braver man than me to back the current favourite on BETDAQ. The comment in running last time was: ‘Awkwardly away, always in rear’. As the Dragons Den might say, I’m out.

The Amber Fort makes some kind of appeal in a desperately weak race. His course and distance fifth here in a handicap in November actually reads pretty well in the context of this race. He often finishes close up so I’ll cover the win stake with a place saver.

7.45 Wolverhampton sees the stayers strut their stuff. Indian Red comfortably beat Miss Dusky Diva over course and distance last time (pair finished clear) but with a 5lb swing the gap should narrow. I fancy the winner had a little bit hand though and might well be able to go in again.

Great Return is interesting in that he is relatively lightly raced but remains a maiden after nine starts and has been tried from everything between 6f and 2m so far without success.

8.15 Wolverhampton John Gosden’s Natch was second over course and distance last time but beaten eight lengths. In a weak race though, that might prove enough to beat Galactic Spirit was was second here on debut and Jackfinbar who scrambled home in an incredible bunch finish here – the seventh horse in that race was only beaten just over two lengths!

DAQMAN’S BETS (staked to win 20 points)
BET 3.8pts win and 3.39pts place stakes saver THE AMBER FORT (5.45 Wolverhampton)
BET 6.7pts win INDIAN RED (6.45 Wolverhampton)
BET 11.2pts win (nap) NATCH (8.15 Wolverhampton)
