BULL’S-EYE BETS IN THE BIG’UN AT RIPON: In a week when non-runners have been in the spotlight, Daqman this morning struggled to keep his analysis together as runners were pouring down the drain because of the rain at Newbury. He suggests you stick with some bull’s-eye punts at Ripon and wait for the banker tonight.

DAQMAN 307 POINTS UP ON PRICEWISE: Pricewise is under the Daqman hammer at Newmarket, Newbury and Ripon as our man defends a lead of 307 points, 68-12 up this Flat season. He wants to hit the 70 today.

DEFOE IS READY TO SHOW HIS STAMINA

2.25 Newbury (Geoffrey Freer Stakes) Frontiersman’s lost two big races through hanging but to be fair has finished second to Hawkbill and Highland Reel, both in grades higher than today. So one way of looking it this race is asking what could have run them that close?

So far the others are Listed class at best but then so was Agent Murphy when he stepped up to win this two years ago,. He’ll struggle to repeat that at six years old..

John Gosden seems to have the filly To Eternity right again but it’s not a fillies’ race, and, inevitably, w e look for improvement from the three-year-olds, Defoe and Horseplay.

Horseplay had only a distant view – about 15 lengths – of Gosden’s Enable at the finish of the Oaks but this Newmarket Pretty Polly winner (around 1m 2f) is up in trip again today, and her pedigree says stamina.

Defoe’ sire, Dalakhani, gets distance winners so his 1m 2f successes – one of them here at Newbury – suggests speed to go with the stamina, making him an ideal St Leger type. He could just improve past Frontiersman who has had some hard races and prefers firm ground.

3.35 Newbury (Hungerford Stakes) As fast as I write, I lose a runner! So many being cut adrift this morning. I will take sides with Nathra and Breton Rock, because they like the rain.

ROBERT AND ROBERO! GREAT DOUBLE

2.40 Ripon (Silver Trophy) Looking for an improver in this Great St Wilfrid consolation, Bossipop, seemingly well drawn in 11, is a strong contender but has to step up again from class 3.

Apart from old-timers Jack Dexter and Singeur, the only class-2 winners in the race are King Robert, Lexington Times, Reputation and Teruntum Star. Dropped in the weights and with Graham Lee a new rider, King Robert is worth a pound at 16.0 on BETDAQ

3.15 Ripon (Great St Wilfrid) A middle draw is strongly favoured today, both by the stats and by the position of pace horses. Last year’s all-the-way winner, Nameitwhatyoulike from stall 13, has 12 this time around, and will have been laid out for this repeat bid.

Snap Shots who won the low-drawn group (sixth overall from the ‘coffin box’ one stall), is now in 5. Note that he refused to race on the last day.

Six-time course winner Pipers Note, fourth last year from 14, is in 3 today, worse off with the winner, and the fifth, George Dryden (from 10), though better off at the weights, is pushed out to gate 16 in cheekpieces for the first time.

Cheekpieces brought about a stone improvement in Flying Pursuit (13) this summer, and he cannot be ruled out from 12 if playing tagalong with Nameitwhatyoulike from the next-door gate.

Right beside this pair in 10 is Robero (11.5 BETDAQ offers) , who tried to make all over 7f on the last day. Michael Easterby is bullish that he’s the one to catch this aftermoon and has booked Tom Queally

Cheekpiecess didn’t help Eastern Impact in the Stewards Cup, when Growl was fourth and Shanghai Glory a hamopered fifth. It could be Glory time today (9.2 on BETDAQ this morning). Rain would help.

BE CHOOSEY ON THE TRICKY GROUND

7.10 Bath Choosey, a son of Choisir, has tremendous early speed and looks to have come on a good deal since his solid effort at Beverley. A banker on this wet and difficult day.
