SEPTEMBER SONG AS THE DAYS GROW SHORT FOR ENABLE: It’s a day of celebration and a day of sadness, as Enable’s swan-song in England is played out in her Arc de Triomphe prep, the September Stakes at Kempton (2.35).

Today’s headlines

🔹 WHY I’M GOING NAP ON ALENQUER
🔹 CAPE COAST’S FORM IS ACEY DEUCY
🔹 DREAM OF A BIG SPRINT ONE-TWO

ENABLE: 10-MILLION-DOLLAR BABY

She is the ultimate Fortune Cookie. Nearly 40 months ago, we first listed Enable in the Daqman horses-to-follow lists, and we make no apologies for including her today as a token of thanks for great memories from all who have watched her equine grace and power.

She’s no price, and the opposition includes only one three-year-old; though half her age, rated 48lb her inferior! But we’d pay double the stake just to see Enable if we could, as she leaves the English racing stage forever.

Kempton this afternoon would have been Epsom, Aintree (and the Kop!) in one spontaneous roar, though nothing less than a walkover expected. Yet she won less than a length in four of her Group-1 hits.

So add to grace and power, the immense courage of the Million Dollar Baby, and then multiply by ten!

Hold that picture in your mind for a third Arc next month; for that, too, is gifted to television behind closed doors.

Enable has earned £10,692,563 with 14 wins, two seconds and a third from 17 races, including 12 consecutive victories. Her Group-1 success is as follows:

🏆 Epsom Oaks 2017 five lengths from Rhododendron
🏆 Irish Oaks 2017 five-and-a-half lengths Rain Goddess
🏆 King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2017 four-and-a-half lengths Ulysses
🏆 Yorkshire Oaks 2017 five lengths Coronet
🏆 Arc de Triomphe 2017 two-and-a-half lengths Cloth Of Stars
🏆 Arc de Triomphe 2018 short-neck Sea Of Class
🏆 Breeders Cup Turf 2018 threequarters of a length Magical
🏆 Coral-Eclipse 2019 threequarters of a length Magical
🏆 King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2019 neck Crystal Ocean
🏆 Yorkshire Oaks 2019 two-and-threequarter lengths Magical
🏆 King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2020 five-and-a-half lengths Sovereign

WHY I’M GOING NAP ON ALENQUER

⭕ 1.10 Haydock As they lined up for a two-year-old maiden at Newbury last month, Tasfeeq was whispered as ‘a Maktoum monster’, according to one commentator.

Trainer Marcus Tregoning didn’t challenge the description ‘one of the best two-year-olds I’ve ever had’ and the Oasis Dream colt was called at 11-8.

But in the race itself, though Tasfeeq was given a confident ride by Jim Crowley, and though Alenquer dwelt at the start, the William Haggas 13-2 shot led a furlong out, went clear and ‘won comfortably’.

Richard Hannon runs two, Fancy Man and River Alwen, already Haydock winners. That may make backers nervous enough to keep the BETDAQ 3.0 Alenquer going during the morning. Nap.

⭕ 2.00 Kempton The York ground was the excuse for the flop of Cloudbridge 17 days ago but today’s application of a hood suggests not the only problem.

Mystery Smiles was also beaten at York, third in the Group-2 Gimcrack to Minzaal, after accounting for Zamaani at Chester.

Zamaani had earlier gone down the same threeparts of a length to Minzaal’s stablemate, Twaasol, at Windsor. Twaasol is 10.0 against 4.0 Mystery Smiles today, though clearly not much between them on form.

CAPE COAST’S FORM IS ACEY DEUCY

2.50 Haydock (Old Borough Cup) Ian Williams has booked Jim Crowley to return Reshoun to the scene of their 2018 victory, 10lb higher and two wins since under Crowley pushing his rating up 10lb. They were third last year.

Finniston Farm is the only other course winner though over half a mile shorter on firm ground. But there are eight more distance winners, one of them – Rhythmic Intent – at Newbury on the soft.
Calling The Wind returned to form the last day and Saglawy is now a top-grade hurdles player.

Glencadam Glory was sixth here in the Old Newton Cup before a close second at York over the distance on soft. Same with a certain Ghostwatch on the July Course.

I was counting my money, and writing spirited headlines for this column, when Ghostwatch powered through but couldn’t quite catch Cape Coast (Reshoun fourth).

Cape Coast has been first or second in every race (112221) in more than three years, superb placing by trainer Mark Johnston but why am I surprised.

What did surprise me was the 11.0 available on BETDAQ behind 5 Rhythmic Intent, and 8.5 about Cesarewitch hopeful, Future Investment. Both carry penalties; both are up in grade.

Cape Coast is not only a winner in class 2 but was narrowly beaten in a Listed, and that defeat of Ghostwatch was on soft ground.

The Pricewise selection, Rajinsky, is a bridesmaid (races this year 30222) who has taken an extra 9lb on board for finishing second but he did score on heavy ground 11 months back.

⭕ 3.05 Ascot Kipps was H G Wells’ drapers assistant gifted a fortune. Cheekpieces will need to make a difference for this to happen to punters of Kipps, the grey Hughie Morrison colt.

He’s better off with July Course conqueror, Zabeel Champion, but tried different aids that day (blinkers), so it all seems a bit desperate for this ‘bridesmaid.’

Shandaz should hold Grand Bazaar again but My Frankel (BETDAQ 5.0) is building a strong profile in the manner of yet another Sir Michael Stoute improver.

DREAM OF A BIG SPRINT ONE-TWO

⭕ 3.25 Haydock (Sprint Cup) Take the trends, the form and – yes – more mud at Newton-le-Willows. That name sounds much more like the marshy terrain we keep getting, and not just at the Lancashire track.

And we again have to ask: will the trends and the form be obliterated by the going factor? Should we have to watch – as we did at York – decent animals trying to get a foothold among the divots, creating kickback worse than the old sloppy AW tracks.

The advent of Tapeta and the massive pressure that modern circumstances put on every sport – not just racing – means there must be a rethink by people who can think (the search begins).

My Fortune Cookies have two runners in this and, rather than beating our brains out over the heavy ground, we will take Tim Easterby’s assurance that Art Power was ‘not himself’ at York and grant Dream of Dreams more of the Sir Michael Stoute’ magic potion of improvement.

ART POWER (10.0 BETDAQ this morning) was a huge disappointment at York, granted the Battaash prowess, having looked dynamic over Millisle on soft ground at Naas.

DREAM OF DREAMS (4.2 offers) had already established himself in the big league, twice second in the Diamond Jubilee and back to winning form with a stunning seven-lengths rout of the Hungerford field at Newbury. Could we ever doubt Sir Michael Stoute.
