IRISH CHAMPIONS GRAND SLAM

Ireland from start to finish! The Flat turf season starts tomorrow, appropriately in Ireland, as the Irish ended the Jumps yesterday with a rugby score at Cheltenham, winning the four-day series with a phenomenal 23-5 victory over England.

The record was broken when 14-1 Vanillier touched down 11 lengths clear in the Albert Bartlett, a second ‘monster’ created by trainer Gavin Cromwell, after his Stayers Hurdle romp with 12-1 Flooring Porter.

Gavin became the punters’ pal by pulling off the two biggest tries, while Willie Mullins continued as title-holder with six conversions but more places than his equal for number of winners, Henry De Bromhead.

Henry stole the silverware – and jockey Rachael Blackmore the hearts of racing fans everywhere – with an unprecedented treble.

In fact, three riders shared the huge hat-trick after Rachael rejected the ‘gold’ star yesterday in favour of stablemate A Plus Tard who was second: Gold Cup (Minella Indoe, Jack Kennedy), Champion Hurdle (Honeysuckle, Rachael Blackmore) and Champion Chase (Put The Kettle On, Aidan Coleman).

Rachael was champion from three other De Bromhead strikes, Bob Olinger, Quilixios, Telmesomethinggirl, and two from Willie Mullins: Allaho and Sir Gerhard.

📈 IRELAND 23, ENGLAND 5
📈 TRAINERS: Willie Mullins 6 (winners with 12 also placed), Henry De Bromhead 6
📈 JOCKEYS: Rachael Blackmore 6, Jack Kennedy 4.

TIME SAVED UP FOR NATIONAL

⭕ 3.35 Uttoxeter (Midlands Grand National, 4m 2f)

STATS: Only one winner in 10 years carried more than 10-12; only one of double-figure age; only one favourite. Trainer: David Pipe 4. Going: good to soft; soft in places. Cloudy; drying.

1: Time To Get Up (Jonjo O’Neill, 3.7 BETDAQ) Unexposed J P McManus stayer, impressive in big field at Wincanton in only third chase (of just six starts so far). Swerved Cheltenham for this. Inexperienced but streetwise already; only does what he has to.

2: Captain Drake (Harry Fry, 15.5 BETDAQ) Second in this last year when a mistake at the last stopped him on the run-in behind Truckers Lodge. Fourth in Coral Welsh Grand National in January.

3: Screaming Colours (Bill Durkan, 7.5 BETDAQ) Consistent at Punchestown. Second in the Grand National trial there last month. Has won only on soft-heavy.

4 Highland Hunter (Paul Nicholls, 16.0 BETDAQ) Making up into a stout stayer but another whose winning form is all on soft-heavy, and stable below par at Cheltenham.

5: Truckin Away (Philip Hobbs, 31.0 BETDAQ) Has taken time to find his form and now the step up in trip should help (related on the dam’s side to a Welsh National winner).

6: Tommy Rapper (Dan Skelton, 19.5 BETDAQ) Placed in a Graded hurdle at Aintree nearly two years back, and just one small-field chase win. Conditions in his favour. Has a big engine and one day he might use it.

7: Coo Star Sivola (Nick Williams, 22.0 BETDAQ) A stone lower than when in Listed and Graded races at a young age, and has gone well at Kempton and Sandown this year, with Sam Twiston-Davies brought in. Still only nine. Also, in alpha order:

Achile (Venetia Williams) Drying ground not helpful to 11-year-old whose rating rose two stone after three from four in the Spring of 2019 and Grade 3 placed three times

Mighty Thunder (Lucinda Russell) Placed 15 times and won four races on good or good to soft, but hiked 10lb for winning the Edinburgh Grand National (4m 1f) and a quirky sort who can put in a bad one.

Truckers Lodge (Paul Nicholls) Raised a stone after winning this last year and poor form since. Stable 0-23 at Cheltenham.

The Two Amigos (Nicky Martin) Grand servant, still only nine, placed 10 times in 13 chases, including second in Coral Welsh Grand National in January and third in the Haydock Grand National Trial last month. Much better horse on soft ground.

OSCAR LOOKS BETTER CLASS

⭕ 3.00 Uttoxeter The Skeltons had a frustrating Cheltenham, with Nube Negra and Roksana placed and a final-fling punt on Langer Dan beaten on the run-in by Ireland’s record 23rd winner of the meeting.

They give themselves seven chances at Uttoxeter, including Wilde About Oscar in this 2m 4f handicap hurdle.

Oscar won his hurdles maiden here in October and won at Aintree over today’s trip, very heavily backed.

I imagine Aintree is on the agenda if he can cope with a 10lb rise for his Exeter Listed defeat of The Glancing Queen (giving her 7lb).

That one ran an excellent fifth of 15 in the Mares Novices Hurdle at the festival on Thursday, and I can see Harry Skelton taking them on early.

Paul Nicholls could manage only three places (no winners) from 20 runners at Cheltenham, so it’s hard to want an investment in his head winner at Taunton last month, Rockadenn.

Gustavian has lost the heavy ground that has given him back-to-back wins this year, completed the last day over CD here at Uttoxeter. Mint Condition, too, has only soft-heavy in his portfolio.

Was Thibault’s 80-1 second at Ascot a surprise or a fluke? The race readers said he improved. I reckon being first-time partnered by Richard Patrick would have something to do with it but he’s at Newcastle today .

THE WAY BACK FOR NICHOLLS

⭕ 3.15 Kempton After Oscar Wilde, Smarty Wild? He must have a solid chance back in class 3 as CD winner here in January. Hasn’t coped with class 2 either side of that.

Another with good course form, Falco Blitz has to give weight all round, and his stable muddies the water by also saddling Whatswrongwithyou.

Vinnie The Hoddie usually sets a good pace. He won from the front on good ground at Uttoxeter in the autumn. But My Way likes to lead as well.

Things are not going Paul Nicholls’ way but My Way certainly likes the better ground. Question is whether blinkers will work again after their first-time application gave him victory here over CD last month.

Bryony Frost is 2-2 on My Way and knows how to pace a race from the front end and, at 5.6 on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE, I’ll bet this is the way back for Nicholls.
