MAXI BOY! THAT’S SUPER FRANKIE

2.55 Newmarket (Superlative Stakes) Racing’s mix of Roger Federer and Joe Root. That’s the colourful character of Frankie Dettori, which disguises his immense skill and strategic nous in the saddle.

This great sporting weekend comes at a time when politicians bluster and mither and blame each other or anyone else in the arena.

The blame game has no room in sport where a false decision or a failure to fight has always been on camera, not in camera. There is no hiding place, and no one else writes the script.

Will Dettori advertise his talents today? Well before the July Cup, I believe he can turn over the short shots in the Superlative Stakes on Maxi Boy, who looks huge at 8.6 on BETDAQ.

Aidan O’Brien, who trains Year of The Tiger, last won this with Gustav Klimt (2017), splitting successes for Charlie Appleby with Boynton (2016) and Quorto (2018).

Like Quorto, King’s Command is by Dubawi, himself winner of this race in 2004. Though he scored only narrowly first time out on today’s course, King’s Command has been a big word for today ever since.

Wild Thunder swerved Royal Ascot as too immature at that stage but stablemate Mystery Power beat a subsequent seven-length winner at Haydock.

Frankel’s son Juan Elcano is collaterally right alongside them but his form is on heavy ground so has more to prove.

Maxi Boy was a head behind Thursday’s July Stakes winner Royal Lytham when both finished behind in the Coventry, and surely 8.6 in the BETDAQ orange was a must win-and-place bet.

RIPP ORF READY FOR CUP RAMPAGE

3.30 Newmarket (Bunbury Cup) Older horses have beaten the four-year-olds 13-6 this century, and are 8-2 up in the decade. Double-figure stalls are currently six out of seven.

Taking those stats together, only four among the high numbers are aged five and six: Ambassadorial, Admiralty, Hajjam and Sanaadh. Ambassadorial has never won on turf and Hajjam needs a mighty jolt into action from first-time cheekpieces. Sanaadh seems of little account .

Admiralty (16.5 offers) has improved 30lb in the last year and was just run out of a big-field handicap at York in the Spring. Stablemate Burnt Sugar (15.0) won this race last year and followed up in a big Ascot handicap.

At this meeting 12 months ago, Ripp Orf (9.0 on BETDAQ) got up in the last stride to win a mile handicap. This stiff 7f could be ideal as it was at Ascot in September when – off today’s mark of 93 – he slammed a big field, which included Spanish City (fourth at the same weights difference as today) and Vale Of Kent.

Ripp Orf’s trainer, David Elsworth, and jockey, Gerald Mosse, came with a rattle in yesterday’s big handicap, Desert Skyline finishing third at 33-1.

The improving filly Solar Gold comes into it on recent form in Listed races but, as yet, has a poor turf strike rate (1-7), with just one win, and that in a class-5 handicap. She’s a short price to be worrying whether she’s a bridesmaid.

DANNY CAN LAND DREAM JULY CUP

4.40 Newmarket (July Cup) Advertise for another flying dismount? Frankie’s Guineas flop returned to the winner’s enclosure, dropped to 6f in the Commonwealth Cup at Ascot on the last day, but the ground was soft and he was in first-time blinkers.

For today’s purposes the fast finish on firm of 5.5 BETDAQ offer Dream of Dreams and Danny Tudhope in the Diamond Jubilee looks more appealing, and both Ryan Moore and some hefty morning bets suggest that Ten Sovereigns could reverse Ascot form with Advertise.

Sovereigns’ stablemate, the filly Fairyland, was further behind Blue Point in the Kings Stand than was Dream of Dreams in the Diamond Jubilee but the Kings Stand was 5f and Fairyland was doing her best work at the finish.

Pretty Pollyanna, runner-up to Hermosa in the Curragh 1,000 Guineas, was only fourth to Fairyland in the Cheveley Park in September.

Limato hasn’t won a Group 1 in England since this race three years ago. Brando has yet to win one at all on the home circuit. Cape Byron has improved a stone since this time last year but this is a mighty leap from handicaps to Group 1, so we two are parted at this point.

I think Dream of Dreams can improve past them but Fairyland looked a big price at offers of 13.5 on BETDAQ this morning.

PIVOINE POWER AT BETDAQ 16.0

1.45 Ascot There’s early pace right across the track here via Embour (from stall 7), Harome (8), Eeh Bah Gum (10) and Watchable (17) but the concentration of speed seems to be where Koditime can make use of it.

Koditime (from 11), who goes well fresh, is down 7lb from this time last year and hails from a stable of sprinting prowess. Taken at 20.0, along with 11.5 Stone Of Destiny, last year’s Commonwealth Cup fourth and primed for this.

3.50 York (Diamond Jubilee Cup) A double-figure draw has won this eight years out of 10, as middle numbers tend to cut across to the rail and make life difficult on the first bend for those from the low stalls.

Pivoine did just that from stall 12 in a field of 15 here last August. You would now hope to see him make an early break down the rail from gate six.

What’s The Story, who won over a mile here in the Spring, is unlikely to follow him from the one stall, as he must surely be held up to get the trip, and I note that Aasheq stayed well back on the rail in that race won by Pivoine. Mountain Angel is also a hold-up horse.

Around 16.0 from early 21.0 in the BETDAQ orange, Pivoine has been flirting with the Pattern in Group-3 races and over the wrong trip. Today’s his chance to redeem himself, back in his class over the right trip.

Jazeel, whose Sandown penalty is eaten away by the claimer, takes a hold and I expect him to cross to the inside group before the bend.

Stylehunter was hampered, trying to make up ground after a slow start in the Royal Hunt Cup. He’s still 7lb higher than his win in a lower grade.

Setting Sail has picked up a penalty for success over today’s distance on the July Course. He’s drawn wide in 23 but has Jamie Spencer to steer him through the gaps.
