COROEBUS v INSPIRAL BIG FRENCH CLASH: Daqman’s results from six bets Thursday-Friday and his first four races yesterday were 2122222132, including a 6-1 runner-up and a 25-1 third. What can he say that is repeatable in this column! Today his neck is on the line again, taking sides in the big French match of Inspiral versus Coroebus.

BOOST FOR COROEBUS ODDS

⭕ 2.55 Deauville (Prix Jacques Le Marois) When you are on an unbeaten horse, excuses for his nearest rival only serve to create better odds. I’m hoping that’s the case with Coroebus today.

Inspiral had been white-hot favourite for four winning races in a row, in two of them defeating Prosperous Voyage, when she lined up on the July Course last month.

She had beaten winners of 10 Group races and was 7-1 ON for the Falmouth Stakes but, according to Frankie Dettori, she ‘ran flat’ and was no match for the winner, who was none other than the very same Prosperous Voyage, who had been nine lengths behind her in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Prosperous Voyage has been raised only 2lb to a rating of 114 after that, with Inspiral remaining on the 121 awarded her after Ascot. It more or less announces: ‘She hadn’t recovered from Ascot and this defeat will not happen again by a clear 7lb!’

Coroebus is also on 121 (but has to give 4lb to Inspiral), as winner of the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas and then of the St James’s Palace Stakes, also at Ascot.

The Guineas works out well: runner-up Native Trail went on to win the Irish Guineas and to be pipped half a length by the champion of France, Vadeni, in the Eclipse. The Guineas third, Luxembourg, returned to winning form at the Curragh yesterday.

Luxembourg and Inspiral were both FORTUNE COOKIES but, to my eyes – seeing them run and reading the form book – they could not beat Coroebus in the late summer and autumn campaign.

He would come back a fresh horse, improved at home. And today he gets the pace he needs for this easy mile from Batheat Leon, who sparkled in a course gallop on Wednesday.

CHIL’S CHANCE IN THE HEAT

⭕ 3.00 Pontefract (Flying Fillies Stakes): A cracking Listed heat which young horses ‘always’ win; to be more precise, fillies aged three and four have not succumbed to older mares in the last 10 years.

So, like the Deauville race, we must take sides with comparative form uncertain, because the two favourites are both older mares! Can we oppose Gale Force Maya and Chil Chil? If so, what with?

I’ve been missing strike this week with seven seconds and a 25-1 third, when I chose from four Ripon horses, swerving the 11-1 winner because of the draw but Connor Beasley switched to the nearside and pinched the old Great St Wilfrid!

Five out of eight winners have been drawn in stalls 1, 2, 3 of this Pontefract race but Gale Force Maya will want to steal the pace from gate 9. Her jockey? Connor Beasley.

Rear-runner Chil Chil won a Group 3 on the Tapeta at Newcastle but it has not been translated into turf, though her third in the Group-1 Haydock Sprint last September is the hottest form here.

Fred Darling fourth Barbanera takes a keen hold, which was her undoing at Chester. Honey Sweet has won only on the soft. Rolling The Dice usually throws her chance away at the start, but Princess Shabnam has raised her game 13lb since June.

The ultimate irony is that Daqman is made to choose between the two older mares! I went for the one at 3.4 on BETDAQ.

I took the Group form of Chil Chil to beat the handicapper Gala Force Maya, not least because Chil Chil will love the ground and the left turn into the straight.

PEARL SET FOR GROUP WIN

⭕ 4.05 Deauville (Prix Minerve): Whatever happens to Coroebus, Charlie Appleby hopes he’s readied Eternal Pearl for her first Group success in another fillies race.

It’s gone to England four years out of five and the Frankel filly came out of a novice at Kempton to win some black type in a July Course Listed.

She doesn’t do anything quickly and will be tested by Oaks fifth Kawida and Lastotchka, a good second in the Group-2 Malleret but who has always needed cut in the ground.

Your guess is as good as mine what the ‘good’ going report means; there’s never been a hosepipe ban on a French track when they know there are English raiders!
