FIRM GROUND WILL FIND THEM OUT: Only one winning favourite at Newbury yesterday and the chances are about the same for Newmarket this afternoon with a change of ground to good to firm.

TOMORROW: Daqman counts down to next weekend’s Irish Guineas, then the Epsom Derby and Oaks with the Classic season no sooner here than with just a couple of weeks left to run.

HOPE YOU CAN RIDE A DOUBLE

⭕ 4.15 Newmarket Berkshire Rocco has been thereabouts in some quality handicaps at this trip, including fifth in the Ebor in first-time visor.

But he is extremely hard to win with: 1-16 on turf (and that was on soft ground) since October 2019.

He could win it by default but Too Friendly (hooded first time) should be able to handle this, with his useful hurdles form making his Flat rating look low.

There is nothing in his form or pedigree to support Hope You Can Run’s step up in trip but he’s had quiet runs since being gelded, goes well on firm ground and the booking of William Buick seems significant. I took BETDAQ 6.4.

The forecast sunshine and good to firm won’t suit Zimmerman. Scottish Anthem’s winning French form is all on soft, and you have to go back to 2022.

Tradesman has to translate AW form to turf, on which he was 0-3 earlier in his career. Onesmoothoperator is 0-12 on turf.

Buick could be on an early double, with his opening ride, Ancient Truth, well supported this morning. The Dubawi colt’s brother scored first time out by five lengths.

THANKYOU FOR THE DAYS: 4.7

⭕ 4.45 Newmarket The first facts about this field are at odds: no outright favourite has won this since I bought a round in the Bedford Lodge. But last year’s winning trainer, John Gosden, has the favourite and landed the Lockinge yesterday.

Or better to say that Gosden lost the Lockinge but jockey Robert Havlin won it for him with the supposed second-string, 22-1 Audience, making all the running.

Gosden admitted afterwards that hot-favourite Inspiral was ‘carrying condition’ and ‘got tired’ (fourth against the near rail).

Where were the gallops reports out of Newmarket? Good old-fashioned racing journalism and the days of the tout are long gone, replaced by personality pieces from countless wannabees striving to put the popular in Popular Press and same-old-same-old sycophantic ITV having a ‘lovely day out in the sunshine.’

Daysofourlives, who needs this 1m 2f, was a close third in a mile handicap here the last day – first run back – and trainer Marco Botti is in form.

On the ratings, nothing between this Churchill gelding and Mahboob. But Mahboob was 2.86 this morning and Daysofourlives 4.7.

Classic winners have come from AW racing at Southwell in the new order of things, so we can’t knock AW-ace Lough Leane (five in a row), getting more than a stone from the two leading contenders.

WONDER WILL BE AT HOME HERE

⭕ 5.15 Newmarket Royal Musketeer, winner of this in 2022 from gate 7, is 6lb lower than when runner-up last year out of stall 2. He is back in 7 this evening, with Hayley Turner booked. BETDAQ 26.0

Oisin Murphy has won or been placed every time he’s been on Double Time and is currently scoring at near-on 25%. BETDAQ 3.55

⭕ 5.45 Newmarket Murphy again, trying to avenge a neck defeat on Al Shabab Storm by Garfield Shadow. Murphy would have won that day but his mount was hanging and had to be straightened up for his challenge.

That was Chester, as different again from Newmarket, and they are handicapped to dead-heat so I’ll take the improver Woodhay Wonder, whose four out of five includes Newmarket at the end of last season and the start of this. Betdaq Betting Exchange 4.9.
