DAQMAN LEADING PRICEWISE 40-25: A Group event at Leopardstown lightens the load of 55 races at eight venues in England and Ireland today, with Daqman taking the Brighton line for a third nap in four days but back in time to defend his 40-25 lead over Pricewise at Doncaster tonight.

3.20 Brighton (Challenge Cup) Young horses win this (aged three and four are together 6-7) and, as the two three-year–olds are both maidens, not getting much help from the handicapper, I shall side with the four-year-old Caramelised for Alan King.
Kingy won this race in 2016 and has since declared himself as interested in the Flat as in the Jumps, no doubt inspired to do so by his Long Distance Cup winner of last October’s championships, Trueshan.
Caramelised loves to hear his feet rattle and the class-3 hurdler broke his duck on the Flat in June (class 5) and was hampered or would have been placed in the class-2 Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen recently.

WELD’S DAY WITH THE DUKE
⭕ 6.15 Leopardstown (Ballyroan Stakes) Dermot Weld, one-time annual farmer of the Galway prizes, had just one winner at the festival this year.
But he continues to reap a Ballyroan harvest. His first winner in this Group 3 was Gordi in 1997 and last year he made it TEN with his Breeders Cup star, Tarnawa.
His only three-year-old winner was Grand Finale (2000), who had beaten the subsequent Epsom Derby winner, Sinndar, in the Ballysax.
Weld’s second-season player today, Duke De Sessa, beat the subsequent Ballysax winner, Piz Badile, in a juveniles Group 3 here at Leopardstown in October.
The Duke was third in the Ballysax, fifth in the Derby Trial here, and also fifth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, with the epithets ‘not reach leaders’ and ‘never near to challenge’ suggesting that today’s step up in trip to 1m 4f for the first time could now be the answer.
Duke De Sessa is by a French Derby winner but there’s seemingly plenty of stamina on the dam’s side.
Weld’s other runner, Falcon Eight, is down a mile on his recent starts and this Chester Cup winner would be the first seven-year-old winner of this race in its history.
Cleveland, this year’s Chester Cup star over subsequent Ascot Stakes winner Coltrane, was backed to win the Ascot Stakes (1m 6f) on firm ground but was just unable to give 4lb to the winner.
Lafayette landed a 10-furlong hat-trick in the Spring and has been beaten in three starts of 1m 4f since winning a weak Listed at Roscommon in June last year.
Beamish, a late developer, only started doing fast week at Paddy Twomey’s in the Spring. Unbeaten and gave 2lb to a 104-rated two months back.
We don’t know much about Licence and Sandhurst, but I take Duke Of Cessa as geared up for Weld win number eleven, with Cleveland (BETDAQ 4.1) the likely worry.
But, if the Duke can best one, he can best them all, since they stand together in the ratings off 108 and 107, with the exception of Layfayette’s 109 but that one’s Group-2 penalty means that he has to give 5lb to that quartet and 15lb to Duke De Sessa.

⭕ 5.40 Doncaster Another series of the Racing League, which I find as appealing as a Tory-leadership debate but, let’s hope, a little more productive.
I thought Barley (BETDAQ 9.0) had plenty in hand when nudged home down the right wing on Town Moor in the Spring, with the money down.
Though ‘he’ scored back to back at that time, ‘he’ was hardly punished in the weights and 3lb for that Doncaster win is removed by Saffie Osborne’s claim. Gelded since!
⭕ 6.10 Doncaster Is this a ‘hidden horse’? Summer Sands, a Listed winner for Richard Fahey when rated 109, raced up to Group-3 level for Joseph O’Brien but returned to Fahey a year or so back, after dropping a stone.
He’s now down another stone or so (total descent down the handicap 109 to 83), despite finishing within a couple of lengths of the winner in each of two Ayr sprints this summer, running on in both as though this 7f is now what’s needed. BETDAQ 27.0.
⭕ 6.40 Doncaster Or maybe this is the ‘hidden horse.’ Charles Hills was in hot form last week, winning a Group 2 at Goodwood and a Group 3 at Deauville.
The Toff (BETDAQ 13.5) is right down the pecking order in a class-4 handicap, his first, after three very quick maidens, twice favourite suggesting he has shown a lot at home.
⭕ 7.10 Doncaster Lethal Nymph (BETDAQ 6.4) won here over the CD in the Spring and was not disgraced in the Sandown pair of Golden Voice’s three 7f wins which have raised his rating to 95.
Lethal Nymph, just a couple of lengths behind each time, should be in the front rank – he likes to race freely – from the one stall off only 87, dropped back to 6f.
⭕ 8.10 Doncaster CD winner here two weeks back, Animato, with the smart Jason Watson in the saddle, is a three-year-old with room for improvement.
Hayley Turner may give him most to do on another second-season animal, Wynter Wildes, who gets 7lb but is a winner only over shorter and in class 5, when she carried 15lb less and has since fallen just short three times trying to step up. BETDAQ 7.6 Animato
