FRIEND CAN DO DOUBLE AGAIN

3.40 Ripon Trainer Karen McLintock’s form figures for the last two weeks are 113120 and, if you go back four more days, you get to Gurkha Friend’s all-the-way success here at Ripon in a class 2.

He’s down a furlong and down a grade today at the track where he recorded back-to-back wins last Spring.

The first leg was over today’s mile and the second was won with a rating of 90 under Silvestre De Sousa, who rides the six-year-old again today off a pound higher at 2.94 (BETDAQ early mouse).

Dawaaleeb has won three of his last five races but none higher than an 83 rating and none above class 4.

In fact, he’s raced off 82 or 83 for six consecutive starts now and today’s 7lb higher rating is a big worry, albeit his trainer, veteran Les Eyre, has current form figures of 1101.

Trading Point has been favourite in three consecutive races but, again, the two he won were class 4.

He’s up 6lb today, leaving him only 8lb better for a near-16 lengths defeat by Gurkha Friend in that Ripon class 2 on the last day.

Storm Ahead’s best form is on the soft and Frank Bridge likes a bit of cut in the ground.

He has never won this high in the ratings but was a good second here at Ripon over the CD in April, albeit on his favoured ground.

4.10 Ripon David O’Meara has been in hot form in the June sunshine with four winners in three days, and this is a race he likes to win.

His maiden Laubali doesn’t have an obvious chance but O’Meara is good with horses switched from another yard and, in his two runs for the stable, Laubali has finished close up both times and has since been gelded.

Race by race, Daffy Jane is getting progressively better off with Rickyroadboy. Ditto Mutabaahy, with several of them held by these two. So maybe Laubali can push his way through the queue: 17.0 BETDAQ offers thius morning.

MUTAFARRID MARKET POINTER

4.20 Yarmouth A bit unlucky – slightly hampered – to be beaten on his reappearance, Mutafarrid is back on the track where he broke his maiden in a handicap at this level last autumn: around 2-1.

Employer and Martineo have raced only three times and should improve. Preference is for Martineo (8.6 BETDAQ offers at time of writing) in his first handicap but he was drifting this morning.

Employer would be a threat on his Windsor win but was unruly on the last day (pulled hard, swerved).

5.45 Leopardstown September won this last year for Ballydoyle on the way to success in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Today could be an even bigger launch if Secret Thougts fulfils home promise.

First daughter of Irish Oaks winner Chicquita, she is entered against the colts in the Railway Stakes.

So, too, is Tracing, a Galileo out of an Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up. Stablemate Fire Fly is sister to Gustav Klimt.

AL MUFFRIH TO WIN DERBY TRIAL

6.25 Sandown Manor Park is related to sprinters but the 1m 4f of his recent Windsor success (first run after being gelded) was hardly far enough.

He ran green when in front and so coould have come on a lot for that. Trainer Alan King is in terrific form with six wins in 12 days, and Manor Park’s 7.6 on BETDAQ is big.

The 2.66 favourite as I write, Ghostwatch has been running well without looking anything special, and there are no vibes for anything else.

8.05 Sandown It’s a tricky card all night at Sandown but I’m told that the even-money bet, Al Muffrih, targeting the Irish derby or the Ascot Derby (King Edward V11 Stakes), should be longish odds on, based on his form, his homework and his prospects. I could get a shade better than evens (2.06) on BETDAQ.
