WHEN PORT IS RIGHT SIDE..

⭕ 3.05 Gowran Park (Thyestes Chase) ABC guide and BETDAQ offers.

📈 STATS: For this hectic 3m 1f chase on a right-turning track, you need a winner at class-2 level who has Graded form, and is clean in the wind (no tongue-tie); either a tough old boy of 10 or 11 like Total Recall (2020) and On His Own (2014) or a quality youngster, like Djakadam (6yo 2015 winner). All three were trained Willie Mullins but Gordon Elliott has had two wins in the last four years.

Agusta Gold 50.0 (Willie Mullins) Won a mares’ Grade 3 chase at Fairyhouse last year at about this time but poor form since, though has had market support; not jump well in Christmas big race at Leopardstown. Tongue-tie; blinkered first time.

Braeside 7.9 (Gordon Elliott) By the leading sire of Thyestes winners; won the Cork Grand National (Mister Fogpatches 4th) and fourth in the Christmas big race at Leopardstown, giving 10lb to the winner; Death Duty 5th, Foxy Jacks 7th; Augusta Gold pulled up. Travels well which is an asset for this race.

Brahma Bull 40.0 (Willie Mullins) By the leading sire of Thyestes winners; placed five times at Graded level, including won at the Punchestown Festival; also second in the Kerry National, third in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury (Eklat De Rire favourite; pulled up). Pulled up in this race last year/ Cheekpieces first time.

Chris’s Dream 24.0 (Henry De Bromhead) Poor form since 2020/21 season when he won the Troytown Chase at Navan and the Red Mills here at Gowran.

Class Conti 44.0 (Willie Mullins) Not won for nearly three years but Thyestes runner-up 2020 and third last year behind Coko Beach, giving weight to the first two; 10lb better off with the winner today. Tongue-tied.

Coko Beach 20.0 (Gordon Elliott) Modest form since raised 12lb for winning this race, gambled on, in 2021 with blinkers making ‘a massive difference’ that day, but best form since is 7th Irish Grand National (second three out).

Death Duty 22.0 (Gordon Elliott) Grade 1 winner as a novice in the 2017 Drinmore but placed only once since, though decent effort the last day, fifth in the big race at Leopardstown over Christmas, 20lb below his first chase mark.

Diol Ker 8.8 (Noel Meade) Graded-hurdle placed but 0-7 over fences and 15lb below his hurdles mark. Kept on but remote behind Bob Olinger in a beginners’ chase at Gowran in Novembre.

Eklat de Rire 8.4 (Henry De Bromhead) Highly regarded and 3-5 over fences with all wins on heavy; unseated rider at Cheltenham Festival when well placed behind Monkfish. Likes to be up with the pace. See Brahma Bull and Escaria Ten

Escaria Ten 9.6 (Gordon Elliott) Long absence hard to overcome in this race but unexposed (just nine races over obstacles). Second to Eklat de Rire at levels a year ago, and third to Galvin in the marathon NH Chase at the Cheltenham festival.

Ex Patriot 28.0 (Elimarie Holden) Grade-2 course winner here, March 2019 and second to Brahma Bull. Fourth in 2020 Thyestes but poor form after two long breaks since. First-time cheekpieces today.

Foxy Jacks 30.0 (Mouse Morris) Won the Guinness Chase (2m 4f) at the Punchestown festival in April, which is his only winning trip, and lack of jumping fluency hampered his chances, 7th in the big 3m chase over Christmas.

Franco de Port 12.5 (Willie Mullins) 2m and 2m 1f chase winner a year or so ago, not disgraced in series of Grade-1s against top-class Energumene, Shishkin, Allaho and Galvin but easy to back this winter. Handicap-chase debut today.

Longhouse Poet 11.0 (Martin Brassil) Grade-1 placed hurdler, won a beginners’ chase at Punchestown over today’s trip in December from Run Wild Fred, who was second in this race last year. Tongue-tie.

Mister Fogpatches 13.5 (Pat Fahy) Placed in chase 7-11 but won only one (over 3m 7f at Punchestown in May); third both Scottish Grand National and Cork Grand National, well behind the winner, Braeside. Not disgraced fourth in the Ladbrokes Trophy. Might be short on pace on this track.

Ontheropes 19.5 (Willie Mullins) By the leading sire of Thyestes winners but won only one chase, the Munster Grand National (3m) in October; First-time cheekpieces

Scarlet And Dove 15.0 (Joseph O’Brien) I’d like to see Scarlet And Dove win it, because her form is all about our Fortune Cookie and Grand National ante-post bet, Mount Ida.

‘Dove’ won at Grade 2 and Grade 3 level last year and has been placed at Listed and Grade 3 level this season, twice giving weight to Mount Ida.

Smoking Gun 32.0 (Gordon Elliott) Beat Ontheropes when they were beginners in 2019 but only 9th in 2020 Thyestes and pulled up last year. However, returned to form with a bang (good ground) when taking the Porterstown (3m 5f) at Fairyhouse in November. Tongue-tie

RESERVES: Brace Yourself, Stones And Roses, Defi Bleu.

DAQMAN verdict Hidden-horse Franco De Port has been buried in Grade 1 yet is Paul Townend’s pick on handicap-chase debut. A nippy type who should enjoy railing round this swinging right-hander (won here over hurdles). Braeside is progressive in the handicap but well down on actual weight to be carried; classy and consistent.

TOMMY TO GET AW HAT-TRICK

⭕ 2.25 Southwell Tommy De Vito has won twice when fresh and his AW record is 211. Looked an improved sort when winning at Kempton in October after being gelded.

Trainer Charles Hills is 25% at Southwell and is currently striking on AW at 43%. Jockey Rossa Ryan is 33% for Hills. BETDAQ 3.45

⭕ 5.00 Newcastle Dubai Lady missed the break at Kempton the last day but made no mistake on the debut here at Newcastle in December, turning over the favourite, who won next time with ease. BETDAQ 2.68

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
