BULL’S-EYE BET: GET ON THE HENNESSY GAMBLE EARLY! Daqman goes for an early strike in Saturday’s Hennessy Gold Cup with a 11.0 offer, which he says will be the gamble of the race. He stakes to win 50 points.

BIG-RACE ABC GUIDE: Daqman insists that a young horse will win, and gears his ABC guide to six and seven year olds. Here’s how the runners match the stats:

A Aged six or seven (8 out of 10)
B Won a Graded chase (8 out of 10)
C Already a winner beyond 3m (9 out of 10)
D Won at Newbury (7 out of 10)
E Minimum rating 145

ABCE Katenko Shot up 21lb at the start of the year, when second win in back-to-back successes was the Murphy at Cheltenham, despite staying more than 3m at Sandown three weeks earlier.

Fitness doubt, though stable in form, and experienced for his age as early starter to chasing in France. But drying ground may be against him.

ABCE Lord Windermere Another without a run back since winning the prestigious RSA, stepping stone to King George and Gold Cup.

But the Oscar gelding is very lightly raced – just six chases on the CV – and has always been regarded as a 3m+ horse.

Has improved dramatically at home in the summer recess, as you might expect of a young, heavy-build horse, and he is expected to be the gamble of the race.

ABCE Rocky Creek Reckoned a Grand National sort with the Hennessy long ago his early target, and has always been first or second when fresh.

Starting out from a traditional top-novice launchpad (he won the Reynoldstown from Houblon des Obeaux), he now follows in the footsteps of Denman, attacking the Hennessy in his second season.

ABE Houblon Des Obeaux Won first run back and was able to follow up, no problem, when doing the same in the autumn of 2012, his last Graded-novice success coming off 142.

Second to Rocky Creek in the Reynoldstown in February, he flopped twice at Cheltenham, including behind Lord Windermere in the RSA, but his comeback win this month has sent him up to 154.

ABE Invictus Arguably the best form of any horse in steeplechase training, as winner of the Reynoldstown from Gold Cup hero Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti. Only that was two seasons ago.

He hasn’t been seen since but trainer Alan King is confident that he has him back where he was, despite 651 days’ absence.

ABE Opening Batsman Won the Racing Plus Chase on good ground at Kempton in February on only his fourth outing over fences. But he flopped afterwards and pulled up again on his reappearance behind Houblon des Obeaux.

AB Terminal Not disgraced but blundered away his chance behind Lord Windermere in the RSA. Not inconceivable that the mighty Mullins yard can improve this youngster, who was once 7-10 in bumpers and hurdles.

AB Triolo D’Alene Impressed as a speedy winner at Huntingdon yet able to jump the giant Topham Trophy fences at Liverpool, looking a real stayer in the making. Too fresh first time back at Ascot, and now better off with the winner, Houblon des Obeaux.

ACE Our Father Reappearance winner for David Pipe last season and the yard has been in devastating form with lightweights this autumn.

ACE Same Difference Behind Houblon des Obeaux first run back but a winner at the Cheltenham Festival and close second in Sandown Gold Cup (3m 5f). Stable doing well. Likes the better ground but up in the weights and badly in with Super Duty.

AC Highland Lodge, AD Loch Ba, AE Cloudy Too, Hadrian’s Approach, Super Duty, A Merry King, Vesper Bell

FRIDAY: THE KINGMAKER RACE ON THE SECOND DAY AT NEWBURY

You can live off a race on Friday. Newbury’s second day of the Hennessy meeting features the Berkshire Novices’ Chase, with its history a catalogue of champions.

The first winner, Katarino (2001) went on to land back-to-back Fox Hunters at Aintree; Jair Du Cochet (2002) followed up in the Feltham on Boxing Day; and the Pipe pair Puntal (2003, won the Sandown Gold Cup the following year) and Vodka Bleu (2004) were horses for the future.

But then came the first of the real big-hitters: Denman (2006) would be followed by Bobs Worth (2011) as the race produced two Gold Cup winners in six years.

Last season’s scorer, Dynaste, the Pipes’ third winner in the decade, suggested at Haydock at the weekend – when he split Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti – that the race has turned up ‘gold’ material yet again.

Of course, Denman (twice) and Bobs Worth both went on from this race to win the Hennessy, which is where I came in.
