DAQMAN’S ON A ROLL IN THE NATIONAL: Daqman’s horses to follow, his future Fortune Cookies at the big festivals, will include some which target the Liverpool Grand National, which he’s won with two at 33-1 and one 10-1 shot in recent years. Today’s update also adds those he praised in Sunday’s review of weekend results.

THAT LOOKS VINTAGE AINTREE FORM

The Grand National treble is on. Owner Trevor Hemmings, who has already won the Aintree marathon with Hedgehunter and Ballabriggs, now has Vintage Clouds on a mark that will get him into April’s big race. Clouds could become only the third grey winner in modern times since Nicolaus Silver in 1961 and Neptune Collonges in 2012.

Vintage Clouds, whose success at Haydock on Saturday was all important to his Aintree handicap mark, is trained by Sue Smith, who plotted a National with Auroras Encore in 2013.

The half-brother to Vintage Star is still only eight but has been third in the Haydock National Trial, seventh and third in the Scottish Grand National and fourth in the Coral Welsh National. That looks Aintree form all right!

He’s steadily risen 11lb since winning last October, with form figures inside 13 months of 1242331.

Daqman’s horses to follow (the elite of which are Fortune Cookies) have won the big race twice in the last three seasons with Rule The World (WON 33-1) and Tiger Roll (WON 10-1) completing the column’s own hat-trick, which started with Silver Birch (WON 33-1) in 2007.

His current list to follow is showing 171.66 points profit to 20-point level stakes, with the winners

HARLEY LOOKS STREETS AHEAD

12.40 Southwell Princess Harley is an 11-time maiden but crucially has only raced once here at Southwell and it was a good effort at that when second to Kabrit in a handicap off a mark of 67.

A good run from Anna Jammeela in the opener at 12.10 would increase confidence as she finished third in that race.

Southwell is so unique that you might as well just consider Princess Harley on that evidence alone going into this weaker looking maiden event. Certainly the surface suited her, as did the step up in trip to the same distance as she races over this afternoon.

Main danger on the BETDAQ market is Rare, owned by Qatar Racing, but so far one of their lesser lights. The Galileo bred filly was a well beaten third in a Lingfield maiden last time out and has no experience with Southwell.

It’s a strategy that can backfire but I’d much rather side with experience on the surface, rather than guessing whether a horse will handle the Fibresand. I think in the long run it pays off.

Principia started life in France but made a better than expected start for trainer Michael Appleby when fourth at Wolverhampton. She should improve but is up in trip and on her first start at Southwell needs to be a watching brief.

1.40 Southwell Astraea tops the weights here and ran much better at Catterick last time out when third but again we have the dilemma of her facing the Southwell Fibresand for the first time.

It’s a weak contest and I though the Scott Dixon trained Coiste Bodhar was of interest. He only finished ninth in the Catterick race so has plenty to find with Astraea but is a different proposition here at Southwell – a multiple winner – and clearly enjoys the surface.

2.50 Sedgefield Dr Dunraven looks set to defy his penalty for a very easy win at Plumpton last time out where he jumped well, made most of the running and seemed to score with plenty in hand. The runner-up gave the form a boost on Saturday and it’s no surprise to see Peter Bowen strike while the iron’s hot and before the handicapper has his say.
