BECKETT TRIES SIMPLE TRICK: Daqman checks out the field for the St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday in ratings order, with Ralph Beckett’s filly You Got To Me only 2lb behind but allowed 3lb against the colts. The trainer has done it before with Simple Verse, when official figures had her 8lb and 6lb behind joint favourites.

GOT TO GO FOR THE LEGER

⭕ 3.40 Doncaster, Saturday (St Leger) Winner £421k. STATS: Four of last five winners were drawn in 2, 4 (twice) and 5. The last seven were 9-2 or shorter at SP, three of them favourite.

Aidan O’Brien has won three in the decade, Ralph Beckett one with a filly, Simple Verse (2015).

115 SUNWAY (David Menuisier) Won the Saint-Cloud Criterium as a 2yo on very soft ground and back there in the Spring, beaten a neck in the Greffulhe.

Four lengths down in the French Derby but just threeparts of a length, second, behind Los Angeles in the Irish Derby, first attempt at 1m 4f. King George fourth.

114 JAN BRUEGHEL (Aidan O’Brien) Unbeaten in three starts this year scoring twice at Group-3 level, one on soft (Curragh), one on firm (Goodwood). Overrated on bare form but still green at Goodwood and the one he beat there, Bellum Justum, has since won the Nashville Derby at Kentucky.

113 ILLINOIS (Aidan O’Brien) Never out of the frame. Neck second to Los Angeles in the Juddmonte International, after runner-up to French Derby third, Sosie, in the Grand Prix de Paris.

Strong form over further, when winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot on firm ground in fast time.

113 YOU GOT TO ME (Ralph Beckett) Supplemented (£50,000) after 26lb rise in the ratings this year.

Fourth in both the Oaks and the Ribblesdale (set strong pace) before – held up – taking the Irish Oaks (with tongue–tie), though Aidan O’Brien runner-up, Content, reversed the placings in the Yorkshire Oaks on good to firm. Gets 3lb fillies’ allowance.

112 GROSVENOR SQUARE (Aidan O’Brien) Group-3 winner last year and this, second trying to make all in the Curragh Cup (1m 6f) but winning the St Leger Trial over the same CD by 20 lengths, running lesser opposition into the ground.

110 DEIRA MILE (Owen Burrows) Never out of the first four but won only on his novice-stakes start to the season. Fourth in the Epsom Derby to City Of Troy, a length and a half behind Los Angeles.

102 ALIGN THE STARS (Charlie Johnston) Led, or up with the pace, in back-to-back handicap wins over the Leger trip in summer hat-trick at Thirsk, Haydock and Goodwood, but weakened, 8th of nine, in the Lonsdale Cup (2m) at York.

102 EUPHORIC (Aidan O’Brien) Soon led, runner-up to Los Angeles, in Leopardstown Derby Trial and pacemaker again in English (9th) and Irish Derbys (8th).

095 WILD WAVES (Andrew Balding) The only CD winner in the field, a handicap in June when rated only 85. Well behind Align The Stars at Haydock but stayed on, 4th, in the Melrose at York, which is also 1m 6f.

LOS ANGELES: Doubtful runner. See Irish Champion Stakes in yesterday’s Daqman.

WHOOP WHOOP FOR THE NAP

⭕ 4.50 Lingfield Whoop Whoop made all to win well here last week and there is every chance the Tom Ward trained filly can strike again under her penalty.

This is another step up the class ladder but that’s mitigated by the fact that her rivals are not in the best current form and she might be still well handicapped on the basis that the cheekpieces worn for the first time last week have seemingly brought about an improvement.

SDS hasn’t so far been able to use his magic to get a first win out of Berry Clever who remains a maiden after 11 starts. His last two efforts have been in a grade lower than this and he surely needs a break from the handicapper?

ALL IN VOGUE

⭕ 5.40 Worcester I picked out Rockola Vogue for this on Monday! The form of her six length bumper win over Alan De Banks at Worcester took a nice boost on Monday at Newton Abbot when the runner-up went on to win the final race beating a well backed favourite.

Rockola Vogue looks an above average recruit to hurdles on good ground which she should be suited by.

At the top of the Betdaq Betting Exchange market is Dameofthecotswolds who is struggling for a first hurdles win and comes into this on the back of a shocker at Uttoxeter in May when she was sent off 4/5 favourite but trailed in last of four, beaten 60 lengths, with connections offering no explanation for the poor run.

I can understand her market position given a drop in class and some useful handicap form but it’s very hard for me to back a short priced runner on the back of such a poor outing and I will go for a WIN 20 strike on Rockola Vogue instead.

SUNBIRD TO SHINE AGAIN

⭕ 6.40 Worcester Dan Skelton has the mare Santa Clarita out again quickly after her win here last week over the shorter 2m 4f trip. The problem now is she has a 7lb penalty to defy and given her win came in fortuitous circumstances that might be tough. She’s in the form book as the winner but she was two lengths down coming to the last and looking held before being gifted the race by the fall of Header Park.

At much better odds I prefer Indian Sunbird who makes her fourth consecutive attempt over course and distance with her form so far reading 12U. Her unseat (at the first) last time out was hopefully nothing more than a blip and can she can again get competitive over a trip and course she clearly enjoys.
