LA LIGA PREVIEW: SEVILLE v REAL BETIS.
Live on Sky Sports: Sunday 20.30pm
Some rest for the wicked….
After another week of international football we are back to the football that enables the WAGS to go shopping in Milan. Lionel Messi and Ronaldo finally Got a deserved day off and this should help their respective La Liga clubs pick up three home points each this weekend however Atletico Madrid and Colombia superstar Rademal Falcao had to travel to the USA for a glamour friendly v Brazil in ‘Tony Soprano’ territory.
This was also the week that saw Steven Gerard win his 100th cap for England, the self proclaimed third best player in the world (comments welcome) make his seven minute international debut for England, one Wilfred Zaha and Swedish martial arts black belt Zlatan Ibramhimaovic gave us the pleasure of his football genius in a master class at the not so friendly ‘Friends’ Arena.
Seville Derby….
Week 12 of Spain’s La Liga and this week I am going to concentrate on the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium where home side Seville entertain fourth place Real Betis in what is known in these parts as the ‘Derbi Sevillano’. Like most city football derby’s this has had it’s fair share of crowd trouble and on pitch aggression so it will be no surprise to see a fairly feisty affair. The visitors Real Betis won the Spanish league way back in the 1930’s managed by an Irishman, Paddy o Connell, who then went on to manage Barcelona. Seville for their part are the most successful club in the Andalusia region having also won one league title plus five ‘Copas del Rey’ and two UEFA Cups.
Funny Form….
The visitors Real Betis will arrive on Sunday evening in the unusual position of sitting above Seville in the league standings. Betis are doing very well by their standards this season and coach Pepe Mel will be boosting his team’s confidence further by reminding them that they have beaten Seville in their last two liga visits here. This season their two front men Ruben Castro and Jorge Molina have hooked up very well and they will keep the Seville back four on their toes. They are the highest scorers outside the top three with eighteen goals scored in eleven games, impressive, however looking at this more closely they have, in my view, had a fairly easy run. When the ‘Verdiblancos’ met quality sides like Malaga and Atletico Madrid they were soundly beaten and in order to push on with a winning wager in this match we must assess and determine if their hosts are also a quality side.
Frustrated Fans….
If you are a Seville fan you will be familiar to annually witnessing your team threaten to do great things only for it all to fall apart at some point or another. This frustration has also been vented by the club’s president who has his club now on it’s third manager in as many years. Coach Michel Gonzales must not be too unhappy with his team’s form, particularly at home, where they have lost only one from six and that was a very unlucky 2-3 reverse to the mighty Barcelona(10 v 11 for 20 minutes). They also beat Real Madrid one nil and scored in every home game bar one(when Levante came and parked the bus). Seville have top quality players such as Chilean Gary Medal, Brazilian Cicinho and local boys Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo along with tricky Croatian Ivan Rakitic. The reason coaches have got their marching orders in the past few years is because they have been handed an excellent squad however have not made use of them. In my eyes El Presidente has finally got a coach that looks like lasting more than one season and if he can get a victory over their arch rivals on Sunday night then he will have these frustrated fans, well, less frustrated.
A home victory….
This game will be passionate, fast and very physical and don’t be surprised to see a red card. Both these sides clearly have goals in them however as mentioned above I feel the that when Real Betis come up against a quality side then they will find life very difficult. Seville have been frustrating in past seasons but I believe that under this new coach they are improving rapidly. Real Betis may have left with all three points on their last two visits but I strongly feel this Los Rojiblancos side will on Sunday night send their derby rivals scarpering back across the other side of the city empty handed.
