JONATHAN HOBBS: Another big night at Romford with the final of the Coral TV Trophy and Savana Winner is out to defend her title.

SAVANA WINNER aims to do a Scurlogue Champ tonight and successfully defend her Coral TV Trophy title at Romford tonight.

The London Road venue, fresh from a £10m rebuild, remains very much in-focus after last week’s Grand Opening and racegoers – plus viewers on RPGTV (join myself and Darrell Williams later!) – are in for a treat with the TV Trophy plus the heats of the Coral Puppy Cup.

However, it’s the £10,000-to-the-winner marathon showpiece which takes centre-stage and there is Irish interest tonight with an entry straight from Golden, Co. Tipperary, with Graham Holland sending over Riverside Honey – and this fantastic bitch set a new track record for Romford’s 925m in the heats.

She is therefore the one to beat, but Savana Winner knows how to win also – plus Aayamza Breeze remains at the top of her game and is a credit to connections, who are looking to land a notable double after Aayamza Breeze’s Champion Stakes victory. So, eyes down for another superb night’s racing at Romford.

Romford

6:27 A cracking 400m event kicks off proceedings. The Lee Field-trained Native Cobbler has been running well at Monmore and, if keeping Monmore Puppy Derby at bay into the turn, might always have the edge.

Play: Native Cobbler

6:44 Deep Pockets showed up well behind a good winner last week in Piemans Noelle and, still in maiden company despite running well in major competitions, Seamus Cahill’s dog might prove too good.

Play: Deep Pockets

7:03 Heat one of the Puppy Cup and this looks a penalty kick for Badminton Donal. Kevin Hutton’s dog is plenty short enough but showed good pace last week and does have a 23.91sec best trial time gives him a clear edge.

Play: Badminton Donal

7:17 Heat two of the Puppy Cup and a better chance for Blue Tick George to get a run? Jim Daly’s dog impressed in qualifying trials but was crowded out on debut, but now gets the red jacket to help matters.

Play: Blue Tick George

7:33 Heat three of the Puppy Cup and another red-jacketed runner catches the eye in the form of Billies Tea. A slow start proved costly in a hot race last week but if breaking smartly could match strides with improving local Southpaw Hammer from the get-go.

Play: Billies Tea

7:49 Heat four of the Puppy Cup and another Kevin Hutton-trained youngster Headford Tony might take some holding. He has a better start in his locker than last week and could always be dominating, although Droopys Carat and Parsnip Gerry are serious rivals.

Play: Headford Tony

8:06 Heat five of the Puppy Cup now and Vancouver Mike could cheer the locals. From the kennels of last year’s winner Philip Simmonds (Grays Cup Winner), this impressive A1 debut winner could double up if hitting the sand running.

Play: Vancouver Mike

8:21 The sixth and final Puppy Cup heat. Ballymac Micko looks an interesting newcomer from Jim Reynolds’s kennel. This raw youngster has impressed in qualifying trials and could be chief danger to highly-rated debutant Palatine Amber – if breaking.

Play: Ballymac Micko

9.26 A decent night for Kevin Hutton’s kennel could continue with victory for Ballymac Diego. He missed the up in the Champion Stakes semis but returned last week to beat Desperado Dan in a thriller. The draw inside Piemans Noelle helps.
