JONATHAN HOBBS: For the first time since March, open racing graces the RPGTV and SIS screens tonight and crowd favourite Romford is definitely the place to be – well, almost. Another behind-closed-doors Friday night meeting at the Coral venue oozes class, but this time it’s full of open-race contests. Superb.

What a weekend in store !!

Romford tonight is our first port of call where the undoubted highlight is the clash of the Coronation Cup one-two in Antigua Rum and Sparta Master – with the 2019 Coronation Cup hero Desperado Dan thrown in for good measure.

Sunday sees the start of Colossus Bets Kent Silver Salver at Central Park and this 36-runner competition is top-notch, too.

Here’s a few eye-catchers:

Romford

6.09: The first eye-catcher is Headford Duke, albeit Maxine Locke’s runner takes his chance in the opening A1 contest. He’s lightly-raced and therefore open to better anyway, but two wins from four starts have shown plenty and he now faces top-grade rivals for the first time. It’s a tough ask, but the black jacket looks a progressive youngster.

Play: Headford Duke

6.58: The bitches’ contest is a crackerjack affair. A host of regular winners do battle and any mistakes will be costly but while Newinn Liz might solo outside should Seaglass Shadow edges inwards early, the vote goes the way of Playbook. The Mark Wallis-trained runner is a regular winner with early speed and winning Romford form. That said she needs to be away to counter any rails move from the classy Pink Osteria next door.

7.38: Heats of 400m comp now and Dower Product caught the eye in defeat last week behind the impressive Seaglass Shadow. Nathan Hunt’s runner trialled back well post-lockdown in 23.97sec and that sort of pace should serve him well here. A slick start and lead is needed, however, to beat the likes of Signature Callum and Tiffield Blueboy.

Play: Dower Product

7.58: Another 400m heat and the Wallis camp could be on the mark again. He sends out Have A Brandy here and the draw and his trial work could seal the deal. This C&D winner can use the rails to best effect to turn handy, perhaps even bossing proceedings given the chance. A best time of 23.95sec gives her the edge.

8.54: A fantastic 575m heat now where Coronation Cup runner-up Sparta Master is fancied to reverse form with his big-race conqueror Antigua Rum. Sharon Thompson’s dog ran a stormer on his return to the fray at Towcester looking a potential Derby contender let alone Champion Stakes winner and might always be handy at one of his favourite tracks.

Play: Sparta Master

9.12: Roxholme Socks is well regarded and has moved well in Towcester comeback trials. She’s without a pre-event spin here but that shouldn’t be too much of a hindrance given she’s run well at Romford before, running-up in maiden event here in February. Seaglass Celine could help make the market given her solid win last week.

Good luck all.
