JONATHAN HOBBS: Our greyhounds tipster is kicking off the week with his plays at Nottingham this evening.

NOTTINGHAM stages one of the best National Sprints of recent years and the Sprinter of the Year title is very much up for grabs heading into the Local Parking Security-sponsored event which starts tonight.

The heats have thrown up some intriguing clashes and are topped and tailed by decent four-bend events, as the home of the Greyhound Derby has a strong end to the year.

Looking at tonight’s card, a few tasty bets stand out . . .

Nottingham

7.36: A 500m open precedes the National Sprint heats and Flaky Bandit could make home advantage tell. Lynn Cook has guided the two-year-old up the graded ranks in great style and he ran well in defeat in last week’s A1. Unable to lead then, he might well tonight.

Play: Flaky Bandit

7.52: Heat one of the National Sprint and Angela Harrison’s Droopys Reel is tough to look beyond. The Scurry Cup champion has produced two sensational runs over C&D with electric times posted and can be opposed. Paul Philpott’s Melodys Jack might be a place bet or forecast alternative. He got no sort of run behind Droopys Carat last week but was on terms at the bend.

Play: Melodys Jack (place)

8.08: Heat two of the National Sprint. Gentle Storm has chased home two good sorts in Droopys Reel and Droopys Carat and not been disgraced in either contest. Carol Grasso’s runner could break smartly from the midfield pitch and might soon have his rivals under pressure.

Play: Gentle Storm

8.23: Heat three of the National Sprint. Pull The Trigger looks a cracking sprinter of Pat Curtin’s and should make no mistake with likely improvement on a prep trial here. He’s been in brilliant form at Sheffield and the Monmore raider should soon be on the money.

Play: Pull The Trigger

8.37: A trappy contest for heat four, but a classy one nevertheless. Ernie Gaskin’s Lambeth Way is unbeaten in the UK so deserves the utmost respect. His devastating burst of pace might soon have these at full stretch, although both Geelo Breeza and Not So Lento are certainly good enough if close enough off the second bend.

Play: Lambeth Way

8.51: Gislebertus probably ran in a tougher prep race than this heat five last week – and could prove the fact by winning heat five. He will have improved for his Nottingham sighter then and might have the edge. Salacesknockout is well pitched inside and pounces if they crowd outside.

Play: Gislebertus

9.06: The final National Sprint heat and Salacres Punch will look to have the last laugh for the locals and the Shelbourne form of Peter Harnden’s runner is top class. However Troy Bella is always a tough nut to crack, boasts a cracking strike-rate and runs the track well. David Mullins’s runner also loves the striped jacket.

Play: Troy Bella
