PREVIEW
Rafael Nadal’s shock defeat in the second round on Centre Court last night proved no one is untouchable in the magical theatre of Wimbledon.

Having seen the Spanish football team take apart France in the European Championship football last week, Spaniard Nicolás Almagro will be hoping to inflict a similar result on Frenchmen Richard Gasquet in their third-round tie later today.

Gasquet has never filled his initial promise that saw him ranked junior world number one and now, at 26, is in danger of failing to convert his indisputable talent into Grand Slam silverware. However, as a former semi-finalist at the All England Club, we know he enjoys the grass and he hasn’t dropped a set in his first two matches so far.

He faces a higher-ranked player in Almagro but his rival saves his best for the clay courts and in seven previous visits to SW19 has been a first round loser four times; his best result being the third round. Almagro has a powerful game one would associate with being effective on the grass, particularly as the courts are faster than they used to be, but he was taken to five sets in his opener against Olivier Rochus and then was made to work hard by the unheralded Guillaume Rufin.

Almagro was a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros last month but Gasquet should ensure that any hopes the Spaniard has of repeating that feat are extinguished today and in doing so break Almagro’s unbeaten grip over him.
