PREVIEW

After an absence of over 70 years the Great Britain football team will be making its long awaited return to the Olympic arena later this month and, as the competition’s second all-time leading medal nation, hopes will be high for Stuart Pearce’s men. They warm up tonight against gold medal favourites Brazil in what promises to be an entertaining and informative clash at the Riverside Stadium.

Despite winning five world cups, Brazil have never won Olympic gold and they have sent a strong squad to London to rectify that. Mano Menezes has picked the attacking talent of Hulk, Neymar and Alexander Pato alongside the likes of defensive stalwarts Thiago Silva and Marcelo.

Pearce has said he will make a decision on whether or not Daniel Sturridge will make the final squad after tonight’s game. The Chelsea frontman has been battling viral meningitis and is unlikely to be fully fit for several weeks. The Great Britain side played a special behind closed doors friendly against Mexico last week in Mallorca –three 30 minute periods and unlimited substitutions – but didn’t shine in a 1-0 loss.

Although the tournament is billed as an under-23 competition, each side is allowed three older players and that means GB captain Ryan Giggs will get to line up in his first ever major international trophy. Brazil’s squad isn’t too far removed from their normal all-age squad and they will be looking to bounce back from successive losses to Mexico and Argentina.

The Samba Boy’s fluidity and attacking flair will surely be too much for an inexperienced GB back line to deal with and they are a good price to justify favouritism.
