PREVIEW

Day three of the World Matchplay 2012 and the first round matches continue in Blackpool. Former world number one Colin Lloyd faces Welshman, Mark ‘The Spider’ Webster, in what is arguably the most competitive tie. Lloyd hasn’t reached the heights of seven years ago when he won this tournament and has dropped to 17th in the world rankings as a consequence. Webster, who only turned professional in 2009, has steadily risen up the rankings after switching to the Professional Darts Corporation from the British Darts Organisation circuit and is favourite for tonight’s game.

Since beating John Part in the 2005 final of this event, Lloyd has only made it past the first round once in five subsequent attempts. However, there are signs ‘Jaws’ is returning to that sort of form.  He hit a nine-dart finish in the first round of the European Tour Event 2 in June during a 6–5 win over Alex Roy. Then, in July, he backed that up by winning the tenth Players Championship of the year, beating Andy Hamilton 6–5 in the final. That was his first ranking title in almost 2 years.

The Spider, on the other hand, is in poor form this year, his best placing being two semi-finals from 23 tournaments. He was a quarter-finalist in this last year but needs to step up his game considerably if he is to win his maiden ranking event. Lloyd boasts a far superior head-to-head record and it hard to see why he is the underdog. He looks worth supporting to upset the odds and send Webster home early.
