PREVIEW
Ryan Lochte has already seen off the challenge from his compatriot Michael Phelps in the much-hyped first ‘Dual in the Pool’ when the American scooped 400m individual medley glory on Saturday night. The brash up-and-coming swimming star bids for more Olympic gold tonight but faces a talented array of opponents, not least Chinese favourite Yang Sun.

Sun has already won the 400 m freestyle at the 2012 Games, becoming the first Chinese man to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming. He is the world record holder in the 1500 metre freestyle and, at only 20 years, he has much scope for further improvement. He was also the fastest qualifier.

Paul Biedermann actually holds the world record from 2009, a time when world records were being set across all swimming disciplines after the introduction of controversial polyurethane suits. With many of these now banned it’s unlikely that record will be lowered for a while yet.

National record holder Yannick Agnel swam the last leg of the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay as France staged a major upset in the final last night, snatching victory from a USA team that boasted the combined might of Lochte and Phelps, and defending champions Australia.

Agnel’s dramatic surge to pass Lochte was mightily impressive and he deserves the chance to prove that was no fluke effort. With Yang Sun arguably better over further, and the remaining finalists looking exposed, Agnel appeals at around 2.97 on BETDAQ.
