After a quiet start, the Africa Cup of Nations has slowly come to life in the last few days. We were running at an average of 1.5 goals a game for the first 12 matches and, although only four of the 18 games played so far have had four goals and none more than that, pre-tournament favourites Ivory Coast beat Tunisia 3-0 on Saturday, following on from Burkino Faso’s 4-0 win over Ethiopia, to inject some excitement into the biennial tournament.
Second-favourites Ghana beat Mali 1-0 when they met four days ago but the latter can potentially seal their place in the next round by beating DR Congo later. DR Congo also know a victory will see them go through and the Leopards have already avoided defeat against Ghana.
However, they couldn’t find a way past a stubborn Niger in their first game and are underdogs, available to back at around 3.65 on BETDAQ.
The Eagles have only scored once in two games but their coach Patrice Carteron doesn’t see that as a concern and believes they can get the points needed for qualification. Depending on Ghana’s result with Niger, the West Africans could qualify with just a draw.
Captain Seydou Keita has been in good form for the Malians and the ex-Barcelona man, at 33, knows this is realistically his last chance of tasting continental glory.
Due to that narrow defeat against Ghana, Carteron’s men are probably bigger than they should be at 2.23 on BETDAQ and that price looks worth taking.
