PREVIEW
In terms of outright quality it seems fair to argue Euro 2012 hasn’t been a vintage tournament with no team looking invincible. That said we still have the familiar faces in the last eight and the Spain v France game is probably the pick of the quarter-finals.

Spain, reigning World and European Champions, have looked laboured for much of the championship so far with the team clearly missing the injured David Villa up-front. Despite scoring two goals Fernando Torres has still failed to convince he is the player of old and manager Vicente del Bosque has a selection headache on his hands with three-goal hero Cesc Fabregas pushing for a starting role.

Against both Italy and Croatia, Spain’s brand of ‘tiki-taka’ football lacked a cutting edge and it’s not hard to get the feeling teams have worked Spain out. Indeed Croatia were unlucky not to have sent Spain crashing out last week with the Spaniards thankful for Iker Casillas’ inspired goalkeeping.

It’s easy to forgive France’s surprise 2-0 defeat against Sweden, which saw them relinquish top spot in Group D to England, as they were virtually assured of progress and seemed complacent. That was their first defeat in 24 games and apparently led to a series of ‘disagreements’ between members of the squad.

That should see Les Bleus fired up for tonight’s game and although their lack of firepower has been an issue, the news star midfielders Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri will be fit is a huge boost. Spain boast a superior head-to-head record between the sides with 13 wins to France’s 11 but France are unbeaten in their last six competitive games versus their neighbour, winning five. That included wins in both World Cup 2006 and Euro 2000 as well as the final of this competition back in 1984. Therefore at the prices they are the value call to beat the favourites.
