PREVIEW
It is fair to say that the participants of the first Euro 2012 quarter-final are something of surprise packages. Having both suffered reverses in their opening fixtures of the tournament, it seemed unlikely at one stage whether they would even make it out of their respective groups. Having been thrashed 4-1 by the Russians the Czechs somehow emerged as Group A winners as their first game conquerors inexplicably floundered under pressure to depart the competition prematurely.

Portugal have improved markedly game-on-game to escape the ‘Group of Death’ at the expense of the Netherlands and Denmark. They were particularly impressive against the Oranje where their fast and fluid counter-attacking football tore apart the Dutch defence. Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his doubters with a brilliant brace in a man of the match performance and will surely be difficult for the Czechs to keep under control today.

Unlike Portugal the Czech Republic don’t have a standout player, rather an approach based on hard-work and determination. They were the first ever team in the tournament’s history to win a group with a negative goal difference, which highlights their lack of firepower. Portugal’s defence has looked rocky at times with keeper Rui Patricio a shaky presence but with the likes of Nani, Ronaldo and adventurous full-backs in the shape of Fabio Coentrao and Joao Pereira they have scintillating attacking options.

Portugal made us a tidy profit against the Netherlands on Sunday and are now around the 8.5 mark on BETDAQ for outright victory. We expect that price to contract even further once they have accounted for a pretty average Czech side who look more than a shade lucky to have even reached this far and even at shortish odds Portugal look worth lumping on.
