PREVIEW
Unsurprisingly, considering it’s the German Tennis Championships, there is no shortage of German talent on show in Hamburg today for this popular clay court event. Probably the pick of the first-round ties is an all German clash between world number 22 Philip Kohlschreiber and the veteran Bjorn Phau.

Kohlschreiber loves to play in front of his home crowd as demonstrated by the fact that three of his four titles have come on home soil, although never in Hamburg. The 28-year old enjoyed a decent run at the Wimbledon Championships earlier this month when he just ran out of steam in his quarter-final against the very useful Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He has also beaten Rafael Nadal this season and the likes of Marin Cilic, Feliciano Lopez and Nicolas Almagro, so he is clearly capable of some smart form.

Phau has never won a singles title and, unexpectedly for a 32-year old, has only played 185 matches in his whole career on the main tour. He enjoyed a fair run at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart last week, falling in the last eight to the tricky Serbian Janko Tipsarevic in a three set epic.

If looking solely at rankings we should expect a simple game for Kohlschreiber but Phau’s lightening speed should cause the younger man a few problems and with Phau looking very resilient in his last few matches, this match could go the distance.
