Before Millwall and Crawley Town kick off their league campaigns this weekend there is tonight’s cup tie to negotiate, with both sides looking to start the competitive season as they mean to go on.
Championship side Millwall have never previously played their League One rivals Crawley Town in a competitive game before but, just last month, they lost 2-0 away to the same side in a pre-season friendly. In fairness they did largely outplay their lower-ranked opponents and fielded a number of inexperienced players but it was still disappointing how they failed to score, despite creating a number of chances.
Later today they are likely to include new signing Danny Shittu, who has signed a one-year deal with the Lions, and the Nigerian will hope his second spell with the club is as successful as the last one, which earned the defender a move to Queens Park Rangers.
This will only be Crawley’s second participation in the League Cup but the newly promoted club have not lost on the road since February and will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds.
Early season games often produce strange results but Millwall, at around 1.96 on BETDAQ, are more than good value considering the London team are literally a league above their Sussex opponents.
