PREVIEW
Perhaps surprisingly, this will only be the tenth time Reading have faced Arsenal when they host the Gunners in their League Cup clash tonight. The teams have met twice before in the League Cup with Arsenal winning both games and the London club have won all nine matches in all competitions played against Reading.

Victory for the visitors will see them make the quarter-finals of the competition for the tenth season in a row – they already hold the record for most consecutive last eight appearances in history of the competition. However, they have failed to taste success since 1993.

Brian McDermott’s Reading may have failed to win in the league this term since promotion, but they have found the net with regularity and have not failed to score in any of their last 14 League Cup matches, with a total haul of 35 goals in that time.

Their big Russian striker, Pavel Pogrebnyak has scored in both of his League Cup appearances so far while Arsenal’s wing wizard Theo Walcott has scored five goals in his last six League Cup starts.

It was a close fought 3-2 victory over QPR last time that ended a run of nine League Cup games without a win against top flight teams for the Royals but they face a stiff task later to add to that run.

Even though Wenger is likely to rest most of his first team with one eye on Saturday’s big game versus Manchester United, you would still fancy a second-string Arsenal against a Reading struggling for confidence.
