Later today the second-round Unicef Open contest between world number six David Ferrer and Argentinian Leonardo Mayer gets underway in the Netherlands. French Open semi-finalist Ferrer has never met Mayer and there could hardly be a worse time for the 25-year old to face the Spaniard. Unfortunate to bump into the indisputable King of Clay in Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros earlier in the month, Ferrer is enjoying a great run. In fact he has only lost twice in his last ten matches; both against his compatriot Nadal.

Thankfully for Ferrer, he is unlikely to face an opponent of the quality of Nadal in Netherlands and as top seed he is expected to add to his tournament win here in 2008. He started his grass court campaign with a fairly straightforward victory over Pierre-Ludovic Duclos and surely will have the measure of Mayer.

That said Mayer has also been in good form recently, accounting for the scalps of solid benchmarks in the likes of Olivier Rochus, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Radek Stepanek. His French Open challenge was derailed by the useful Nicolas Almagro but he looked solid in beating  Russia’s Mikhail Ledovskikh in his first-round match.

Nonetheless if Ferrer has any aspirations of breaking into the elite by winning Wimbledon he must see off Mayer with the minimum of fuss and, although we’re not going to get rich by backing Ferrer, he must be the call.
