PREVIEW
The West Indies go into today’s clash with New Zealand in Bassetere confident of securing their first series win against top Test-level opposition in more than four years. The Windies lead the Kiwis 2-0 in what has been a torrid month for Australasian cricket, after Australia’s recent 4-0 humbling by England.

New Zealand find themselves on a run of four consecutive defeats and have struggled to handle the powerful West Indian batsman Chris Gayle who has scored four consecutive 50+ innings. That has included a brilliant 125 – his 20th ODI ton – which saw Gayle surpass Brian Lara in the amount of one-day centuries scored by a West Indies batsman. Gayle remaining in the crease will be crucial to the Caribbean side’s assault.

New Zealand cricket is in a dreadful state with their cricket board revealing that the Black Caps had been refused a pre-tour practice programme in Australia owing to budget constraints. A lack of match practice, a succession of injuries and the absence of key players have all emerged as obstacles for the tourists.

Kane Williamson has been an uninspiring stand-in skipper for the injured Ross Taylor so far and the Kiwis will also be forced to continue with the weak opening duo of Martin Guptill and Rob Nicol in their batting order.

New Zealand’s famed fight when the chips are down has been noticeably lacking so far and expect the Windies to put the hopelessly wayward visitors to the sword.
