In Andy Murray Britain has a genuine contender for the men’s Wimbledon crown but the wait for a first female winner since Virginia Wade in 1977 does not look likely to end this year. Heather Watson and Laura Robson have talent but it is surely a step too far for either of these youngsters at present.
Today former British number one Elena Baltacha starts her campaign against Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta. Baltacha has only once got past the second round in 11 attempts and that was way back in 2002. She has exited in the first round five times here and she looks far too short at around 1.77 on BETDAQ.
Her opponent Pennetta has hardly been pulling up any trees of late but has a much more solid profile than Baltacha. She might be ranked just one place higher in the world standings at 166 but has won nine career titles (Baltacha has none). She is also a former doubles Grand Slam champion.
The 31-year-old has only once made it past the third round here but has made three quarter-finals at the US Open and looks a better bet at around 2.13 on BETDAQ.
There’s unlikely to be much in it but you’d be a brave punter to back Baltacha at odds-on considering she has played just four matches on the main tour all season and has lost two of those. She has also lost all three previous matches against the selection, including a defeat here 13 years ago.
