It should be a titanic clash between Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and French Open holder Maria Sharapova today on the clay at Roland Garros for their semi-final match. The tension will be heightened as the last time the players met on clay last year they bumped into each other on a changeover and neither player apologised.
Azarenka is a former world number one but has slipped down to third in the world while Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam winner, occupies second spot. Both players have dropped just one set so far this tournament but while Azarenka dropped hers in the first round, Sharapova had to battle back after losing the opener 6-0 to Jelena Jankovic in their quarter-final on Tuesday.
The higher-ranked Russian trails the Belarusian 7-5 in the head-to-head record but has won both previous meetings on clay. Azarenka has won both Grand Slam meetings but this is the furthest she has reached in this tournament and Sharapova’s superior clay play can see her reach the final.
