Arsenal’s players failed to answer their manager’s rallying cry at the Emirates two weeks ago in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich and their European hopes look dead and buried ahead of the reverse game tonight.
That 3-1 win by the German giants was mightily impressive and there was almost a sense at the end that they felt sorry for their ragged hosts and kept the scoreline from getting too embarrassing.
Those three away goals mean Arsene Wenger’s men face an almost impossible task against the runaway Bundesliga leaders. The most the Frenchman can realistically hope for is to avoid another heavy demoralising defeat as his charges switch their dreams of continental glory to the less glamorous task of securing a top four spot in the Premier League.
With a number of difficult league fixtures coming up, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wenger rest a few names and the Germans are a very confident selection to finish off the Gunners in style.
Munich have won nine of their last ten league games, drawing the other one, and are 20 points clear of the chasing pack. They’ve conceded just nine goals in 13 home games and just five in their last ten league games.
Put simply, they are class above most of Europe and it would be a real surprise if anything but a comfortable home win happened tonight.
