SHAMROCK DAY 4 OF PUNCHESTOWN: SHAMROCK looks at the two Grade 1 races on the Friday Punchestown card.
A little bit better yesterday with the NEXT BEST Yorkhill winning the finale at 5/4 and the lay of Hurricane Fly (sacrilege I know !) coming off.
Two Grade 1 races on Friday’s card:
5:30 Queally Group Celebrating 35 Years In Naas Punchestown Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m, 4 runners)
The pre-race odds tell you everything and this is completely at the mercy of Faugheen who extended his unbeaten sequence to nine when winning the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Stable companion Arctic Fire must surely be the best of the remainder. He chased home Faugheen at Cheltenham and looked an unlucky loser in the Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle last time out when falling at the last. It was a heavy fall but Mullins told ATR he has worked fine since then.
6:05 Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 6 runners)
A little bit more competitive – but only just !! It still looks at the mercy of Willie Mullins who trains four of the remaining six runners in the race. The pick has to be Nichols Canyon who has plenty in hand on official ratings and showed his current well being with a smooth success in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree last time out.
