SHAMROCK LOOKS BACK ON SUNDAY: No Irish racing on Monday. SHAMROCK has a look back to the action on Sunday from the Curragh where a big challenger for the Ladbrokes St Leger emerged.

My run of three winning naps in a row (8/1, 13/8 and 4/5) came to a disappointing end on Sunday when Shogun was only third and beaten at an early stage of the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh – not helped by the rain.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said of Shogun after the race: “We wanted to get the experience into him, as he can be a bit laid-back at home, but he didn’t handle the ground, as we feared would be the case. Mentally he’s very immature still and we felt we couldn’t pitch him into a Group One without another run. I think you’ll see another horse the next day. Mentally, he’ll be much better.”

The race was won by the Jim Bolger trained Herald The Dawn who claimed long-time leader Now Or Never over the seven furlong trip.

Bolger said after the race: “Kevin said the wheels were spinning but he got there. He’s basically a good-ground horse but he overcame the adversity. He can do six furlongs, seven or a mile. We’ll see where he fits in, and we have choices in Ireland, England and France. The fact that he has shown he can handle some cut in the ground opens up our options a little.”

There was better fortune for O’Brien when Order Of St George (DAQMAN’s banker) ran out an impressive winner of the Irish St Leger Trial and put down a strong marker for the Ladbrokes St Leger itself.

O’Brien said after the race: “O’Brien said: “He handles an ease in the ground well, and is maturing lovely. Seamie was very happy with him. Bondi Beach ran well (in the Great Voltigeur) at York on ground he wouldn’t have liked. He wants good ground, while this fella (Order Of St George) handles an ease. The ground will decide where they go but it’s quite possible they could both go to Doncaster. The lads will sit down and see where we go. They’re both nice horses.”
