NO IRISH RACING TODAY: Shamrock looks back at the success of Sweeney Tunes at Naas yesterday in a race where  Mikael D’Haguenet fluffed his lines – again.

Sweeney Tunes won the Grade 2 Woodlands Park 100 Club Nas Na Riogh Novice Chase under Davy Russell.

The 3/1 chance delivered a solid round of jumping throughout, and having sat off the early pace, he was brought to challenge for the lead with two fences left and went on to see off the persistent Charlie’s Vic.

Mikael D’Haguenet (4/7f) was sent off as favourite for the contest but once again Willie Mullins’ nine-year-old proved to be his own worst enemy.

Looking to hold every chance as the race began in earnest – he made a shunddering error at the third last and surrendered any realistic hope of victory.

Winning trainer, Paul Nolan said: “It’s nice to win these Grade Two races, but at the end of the day Mikael D’Haguenet looked like he would have sluiced in.

“He’s entered in the Pulteney Land Investments Novices’ Handicap Chase at Cheltenham, but he was given a mark over 140 so he’s not eligible for that.

“He’s in some of the open handicaps at Cheltenham, but running this close to the Festival is not ideal so we might look at the Irish National instead.”
