BREEDERS’ CUP IRISH CHALLENGE: It wasn’t the best start for the Irish raiders at Santa Anita last night with Aidan O’Brien’s two runners both finishing out of the frame. Can things get better on the big night tonight ?

Ryan Moore has done little wrong all season but his luck ran out temporarily at Santa Anita last night when both Aidan O’Brien’s runners finished out of the frame.

We never really got to see whether War Envoy was good enough to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf as he endured a nightmare passage when still travelling well and certainly didn’t get the rub of the green behind eventual winner Hootenanny.

It’s the big night tonight and a fairly strong Irish challenge – but not all from Aidan O’Brien’s yard.

I think the Dermot Weld trained Mustajeeb has a good chance in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at 11.40.

He was no match for Kingman in the Irish 2,000 Guineas but went on to win the 7f Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and should love the fast ground tonight.

Willie McCreery sends over Matron Stakes winner Fiesolana to contest the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mares at 7.43 but she ran a little flat at Longchamp and it will take a big effort to bounce back from that at this stage of the season.

Aidan O’Brien’s pair The Great War (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile) and Chicquita (Breeders’ Cup Turf) are both coming here with solid place chances but can’t really be backed with any degree of confidence.

The Great War is unproven on the surface which is a gamble I never like taking whilst Chicquita is quirky and through away a race on Champions Day at Ascot by hanging left.
